Aleks and Ivan swiftly removed themselves from the garbage fire that is Married At First Sight before last night’s commitment ceremony.

Firstly, since when is that allowed? And secondly, it drastically cut the amount of drama we anticipated from the episode and we would be lying if we said we weren’t disappointed.

But given what happened at last week’s dinner party and the show’s abysmal track record for creating long-standing, working relationships… well, their decision made a lot of sense.

The MAFS experts can take absolutely no credit for Aleks and Ivan. Post continues below video.

It seemed like their relationship was over, but in a twist precisely no one, especially not John Aiken, saw coming… it turns out Aleks and Ivan are probably still together.

“The pressures and expectations of the experiment got the better of us,” the couple both stated in matching Instagram posts following their exit.

“Aleks and I stayed together the evening of our exit and I even saw her off at the airport to be with her family again. It was an emotional moment for the both of us,” Ivan said.

“Let’s see if being outside does our relationship any more justice without the pressure and judgements of our peers. That being said, regardless of what pans out over the next few days and weeks, we are forever grateful for all of the wonderful people we have met along the way. We are all just humans on our own journey. Spread love, not hate and judgement.”

…Interesting.

Speaking to 9Entertainment, Aleks admitted she had self-sabotaged her relationship with Ivan.

During last week’s episodes she said she had no romantic feelings towards him.

“I did self-sabotage the relationship and in a way friend-zoned Ivan just to get home,” she said.

“I knew I was never going to leave Ivan, I knew I was always going to have him in my life. But at that time it just wasn’t in a romantic way, because I’d built up my walls, self-sabotaged and just left.”

But even so… it wasn’t a relationship breakdown that saw them decide to leave the show according to their former cast mates Hayley Vernon and Natasha Spencer.

In a video obtained by the Daily Mailthe pair blamed production for Aleks and Ivan’s decision.

“They left the experiment because they weren’t happy with how they were being treated,” Hayley said.

“They thought it was unethical and they were getting forced to make more drama within their own relationship and they wanted out.”

Now-deleted photos from Instagram seem to back up that the pair are together.

It seems like Ivan flew to Perth to see Aleks and without the pressure of cameras and producers around, they reconciled and even celebrated New Year’s Eve together while staying at the Crown Perth hotel.

Maybe we’ll get a 2020 success story after all… maybe.

Sounds like the producers have shot themselves in the foot a little bit then. If they'd just backed off and let them try to get to know each other, the relationship might have worked, and they'd still be there on the show. But by trying to force drama, they've pushed the couple out, and if the relationship succeeds, it will be in spite of the show, not because of it. It's a shame these shows think the only way to be interesting is to have drama, even if it's obviously fake. By contrast, I saw a bit of the ABC show Love On The Spectrum, about young people on the autism spectrum who wanted to find love, and it was absolutely fantastic - *actual* reality. People truly being themselves, trying to find a real relationship, no fake drama or bullshit. And you really wanted these people to be happy because they were so genuinely nice, and there because they were there to find a partner, not increase their Instagram followers.
