Haters gonna hate.
Susan Carland, the respected Muslim sociologist and wife of The Project host Waleed Aly, has decided to hit back at Twitter trolls by donating $1 to charity every time she receives a hateful message.
So far, sadly, she has raised $1000.
“I donate $1 to @UNICEF for each hate-filled tweet I get from trolls. Nearly at $1000 in donations. The needy children thank you, haters!” she tweeted.
A former Australian Muslim of the Year, Carland, 35, wears a hijab and regularly speaks publicly about the rights of Muslims in Australia, which has resulted in her being the target of abuse on Twitter and social media.
Her donation campaign has also garnered lots of kind words and encouragement from Twitter supporters, but she’s still raising money.
Good on you, Susan, for turning hatefulness into a positive. We hope your donations dry up.
Carland and her husband attended the GQ Australia awards at The Ivy in Sydney on Tuesday evening where Waleed Aly won the award for Australian Media Personality of the Year.
Carland teaches gender studies, politics, and sociology at Monash University, with a special focus on Muslim women and Muslims in Australia.
She converted to Islam at the age of 19.
Here is some vintage Mamamia- Mia chats to Susan Carland:
In 2004, she was named Australian Muslim of the Year and is also listed as one of the international Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow by the UN Alliance of Civilisations.
She is the co-creator of the Victorian Convert Support Service, and has managed the Islamic Council of Victoria’s youth wing, Grassroots.
In 2003, Carland gave the International Women’s Day address at Parliament House in Victoria. She has also spoken at Chatham House in London, the Muslim Professionals Forum in Malaysia, and has been a panelist for Issues Deliberation Australia, a public policy think-tank.

I think that if we had no religion in this world we'd be way ahead in our development as a species. Religion has been hindering our evolving, specially that of women, for centuries. Enough of this lunacy. Make all schools religion free now!
This article is about how great Susan Carland is. There is a photo of her being so happy to get her PhD. So why not call her Dr Susan Carland, which seems to be her correct title? Isn't that a tad disrespectful and not giving her the acknowledgment she deserves?
