1. Abbott government reveals details of childcare reforms.

The Abbott government has unveiled its promised childcare reforms, pledging more money to some families but stripping stay at home mothers of nearly all the assistance they receive under the current package.

While some parents will benefit from a claimed extra $1500 per year, stay at home mothers will be forced to meet a rigorous ‘work activity test’ if they wish to continue receiving benefits under the new scheme, particularly where the household income is in excess of $65,000.

The Mothers’ Day package also introduces a means tested single payment and dictates that childcare centres will be paid directly by the government for the base costs of services, which has been calculated at $9 per hour per child. All costs above the $9 baseline will still need to be met by families.

2. Joe Hockey plans to ‘crack down’ on paid parental leave.

Under a controversial new budget proposal,  Treasurer Joe Hockey plans to crack down on ‘double dippers’ who receive paid parental leave both from their employers and the government.

“At the moment people can claim parental leave payments from both the government and their employers so they are effectively double dipping,” Hockey said.

“We are going to stop that. You cannot double dip, you cannot get parental leave paid from your employer and taxpayers … so for people on on the minimum wage they will still get $11,500 for the 18 weeks they are off on parental leave but people will not be able to claim it both from their employer and the taxpayers.”

The change will leave many new parents who were relying on the government parental leave scheme in the lurch.

3. Man admits to leaving baby in a dumpster.

A man has admitted to dumping his 11-month-old baby brother into a dumpster, as well as killing his own mother and throwing his five-year-old brother into a river.

25-year-old Roberto Martinez-Marinero allegedly walked into a jail in Omaha, Nebraska and confessed to the dumping and the murders.

Martinez-Marinero was allegedly driven to confess after the body of his mother was found in a ditch on Wednesday.

The story of Angel Martinez-Marinero, the ‘baby in the dumpster‘, made international headlines this week, when the 11-month-old was discovered by a neighbour wearing just a dirty nappy.

4. Record clearance rates for Sydney real estate

Record clearance rates have been set in the Sydney property market after yesterday’s auctions, with the Domain Group estimating a clearance rate of 89.2%.

The property boom comes with the news that a Western Sydney buyer paid $2.5 million for a small cottage in beachside Coogee yesterday, with plans to flatten the existing home and rebuild. The home last sold for $2 million in 2010.

The previous record was set only last week, when Sydney recorded a clearance rate of 89.1%.

5. Child dead, two others injured after rally car ploughs into spectators in Western Australia

A six-year-old boy has been killed and two others have been seriously injured by a rally car which ploughed into a group of spectators at an event in Western Australia’s south-west.

The car was taking part in the WA Rally Championship event at Donnelly River late on Saturday afternoon when it left the road and hit the group, police say.

The two injured children were flown with their mother to Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital overnight.

One child is in a critical condition and the other child is listed as stable.

Police remain at the scene and officers from the Major Crash squad will investigate.

The crash happened between the towns of Manjimup and Nannup, about 280 kilometres south of Perth.

Police will review vision from the dashboard camera today.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport is also expected to issue a statement.

A version of this story originally appears on ABC Online.
