Sunday's news in 2 minutes.

1. A 39-year-old Swiss female tourist has been gang-raped in rural India. She was on a cycling trip with her husband in the Madhya Pradesh state, when 7-8 men attacked the couple. The assailants reportedly tied up the husband, and raped the woman in his presence. This news story is just the most recent account of sexual violence against women to emerge out of India in recent months.

2. The Gillard government will today announce a new national trial of around-the-clock childcare for 500 families in Australia, to find out whether such an arrangement would significantly help shift workers – including police officers and nurses. News.com.au reports that the trial will include ‘in home’ day care options, as well as extended hours at childcare centres. The experiment will cost $5 million.

3. The United States has said it will spend $1 billion to enhance its missile defence system, as the country is concerned by the development of nuclear weapons in North Korea.

4. Queensland busker David Mulder – a ‘real-life statue’ – was captured on video moving more than usual, when he punched a heckler in the face. He was poked and prodded for 20 seconds in the footage, before lashing out. As of Sunday morning, the video had been watched 1,506,229 times.

5. In his first public address, Pope Francis talked about greater Vatican “openness”. He called on the 6500 journalists from around the world in attendance to acknowledge the Church’s “virtues and sins” – but to share a focus on “truth, goodness and beauty”.

6. If you found $11,000, would you keep it? Or hand it in to the police? News.com.au has reported on Alfred Boyadgis, a 22-year-old student who found a bag in a McDonald’s containing an iPhone, a Medicare card, a Victorian driver’s licence – and almost $12,000 in cash. $11,700 to be precise. The design student pleaded guilty to the crime, and received a 12-month good behaviour bond – which includes a criminal record.

7. Twenty-four people have been killed in South Africa, after a tragic double-decker bus crash. Two of the dead were children. A further forty-five injured individuals have been taken to hospital.
