1. Stephen Bailey charged with murder.

Victorian man Stephen Bailey has been charged with the murder of his mother, Penny Bailey.

Penny Bailey’s body was found in bushland in Donvale on Thursday night.

The 59-year-old woman was reported missing on Tuesday.

Mr Bailey’s lawyer told the court his client urgently needed to be returned to a psychiatric hospital, ABC News reports.

2. Coroner makes further findings in the Hunt case.

A coroner has found that Geoff Hunt was driven to kill his wife Kim and three children by an “egocentric delusion”.

Coroner Michael Barnes said he accepted evidence that Mr Hunt’s main intention when shooting his family and then himself was suicide, but that he believed his 41-year-old wife and children – aged six, eight and 10 — were dependent on him,” ABC News reports.

“His distorted logic lead him to conclude that the children and his wife would not cope without him,” Mr Barnes said.

“It was the result of an egocentric delusion that his wife and children would be better of dying than living without him.”

3. The girls more likely to marry than go to high school.

A new report by children’s rights organisation CARE has found that girls in 26 countries are more likely to be forced into marriage than to enrol in secondary school.

The organisation reports that 39,000 girls around the world are forced to marry each day, and that 62 million girls are not in school. Half of them are adolescents.

“This is of major concern when we know that a girl’s income-earning potential increases by 20 per cent for every school year she completes beyond year four,” the organisation said.

4. Doomsday group is “surprised” world didn’t end.

The leader of a Christian group that predicted the world would end last Wednesday has admitted he is wrong – but that his group will “keep studying the bible” for doomsday clues.

Chris McCann of the eBible fellowship, headquartered in Pennsylvania, USA, told The Guardian it was “surprising” the world did not end on 7 October.

Prior to the predicted doomsday date, he said there was a “strong likelihood” the world would end, but admitted he could be wrong.

“Well, a strong likelihood means that something was pretty well set to happen (in this case according to the biblical evidence),” he said. “Yet there is a possibility it may not happen.”

A statement on the group’s website says: “Since it is now October 8th it is now obvious that we were incorrect regarding the world’s ending on the 7th.”

5. Teenage boy allegedly raped at Australia Day party.

Trigger warning: This post deals with sexual assault.

Three men have been charged with the rape of a teenage boy at an Australia Day party in Brisbane.

The 19-year-old victim was allegedly raped with a beer bottle while passed out drunk. He only learned of the assault two days later when he saw the footage on Facebook.

One of the assailants allegedly sent him links to the video online.

According to Seven News, three men – who were apparently “friends” of the victim — were charged yesterday by Brisbane Child Protection detectives. A fourth is expected to have been charged last night.

6. Robert Farquharson agrees to pay his bereaved ex-wife all his money.

Ten years ago, Victorian children Jai, Tyler and Bailey Farquharson died when their father Robert Farquharson drove them into a dam on father’s day.

Farquharson was convicted of their murder, and is currently serving a life sentence for the unthinkable crime.

Now, Farquharson’s ex-wife Cindy Gambino has won her compensation claim – agreeing to pay her all his money.

Farquharson was originally ordered to pay Gambino $225,000. But the conviction was quashed in 2009, and that payment order overturned

Farquaharson was again found guilty in 2010 and sentenced to life with a minimum of 33 years, Daily Mail Australia reports.

In court on Friday, Justice lex Lasry asked about the value of the claim, and barrister Adam Hill said his client Ms Gambino would get all of the available money.

“There’s a finite pool and the ultimate outcome is that pool,” Mr Hill said.

The matter will return to court in November for final approval.
