1. Malcolm Turnbull elected our 29th Prime Minister.
Malcolm Turnbull is the nation’s 29th Prime Minister ousting Tony Abbott as Liberal party leader after Mr Abbott lost 44-54 votes in a late night challenge for the leadership.
This makes Mr Turnbull our fifth Prime Minister in just five years.
Cabinet ministers including Liberal deputy Julie Bishop threw their support behind Mr Turnbull to give him a convincing majoriy.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Mr Abbott offered the job of Treasurer, and deputy Liberal leader to Mr Scott Morrison, who declined the offer despite declaring he would vote for Mr Abbott in the leadership ballot.
Ms Bishop prevailed in a vote on the deputy’s position by 70 to 30 votes against Kevin Andrews, the Defence Minister who was one of Mr Abbott’s strongest allies.
The Prime Minister-designate said on his victory last night: “There has never been a more exciting time to be alive than today, and there has never been a more exciting time to be an Australian.”
Mr Turnbull told reporters “I’m very humbled by the great honour and responsibility that has been given to me today.”
The new leader also said he is not going to change the climate change policy and emission targets which have been “very well designed.”
He also vowed to bring economic vision to Australia.
Scott Morrison is expected to become Treasurer in the new cabinet, and according to The Advertiser education minister Christopher Pyne will be defence minister in the cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Turnbull expected to be sworn in today by the Governor-General as the nation’s 29th prime minister.
Mr Turnbull said last night he would take the government full term rather than going to an early election.
The big excitement today will happen at Question time which kicks off at 2pm.

2. Tony Abbott shortest serving PM since William McMahon.
Tony Abbott now enters our history books as our shortest serving Prime Minister since William McMahon in 1972.
Mr Abbott was four days away from marking his second anniversary in office on September 18. He served as Prime Minister for one year and 360 days.
Julia Gillard, by contrast was the 14th longest-serving Prime Minister out of 28.
Mr Abbott is also the first prime minister since Ben Chifley to never reside at the Lodge, which has been under renovation, instead he has stayed at the Australian Federal Police college while in Canberra.
3. Tony Abbott misses out on top-up of parliamentary pension by four days.
There are reports that the outgoing leader, Tony Abbott will miss out on his full pension by four days.Mr Abbott will get an annual pension of $307,542 per year, if he had lasted another four days as PM, to make the two-year mark, he would have also received an annual loading of $20,000 a year.
Fairfax Media reports that one of Mr Turnbull’s first jobs will be deciding what extras he gets as well.
Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard and John Howard each receive an extra $300,000 a year with which to maintain a staffed office, plus travel costs.

5. Cy Walsh to face court over murder of his father, Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh.
The son of Adelaide Crows football coach Phil Walsh will face court today charged with the murder of his father.
26-year old Cy Walsh will appear via video link in a hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
It is not expected he will enter a plea.
Phil Walsh died after a domestic dispute at his home in July.
6. Mother on trial for genital mutilation.
The mother of an eight-year old girl is accused of organising the genital mutilation of her daughters between October 2009 and August 2012 and is standing trial at the NSW Supreme Court.The woman, a member of the Dawoodi Bohra Shia Muslim community, has pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged she promised her daughters it would only be “a little cut down there” and that they would get a glass of lemonade as a treat after.
Fairfax Media reports that another woman, who cannot be identified, has pleaded not guilty to carrying out the alleged mutilation on the girls.
The separate procedures allegedly took place in Sydney and in Wollongong.
Another high-ranking member of the community, Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri, has pleaded not guilty to being an accessory after the fact.
According to Fairfax Media when the girls mother spoke to her daughters after their police interviews her conversation was secretly recorded. She is alleged to have told them “OK, you told them everything … now we are in trouble … I told you this is a big secret.”
7. Two-year old boy drowns backyard pool.
A two-year old boy has drowned in a backyard pool in Melbourne’s west. The child was found by his mother floating in the pool at their home in Melton South just after 1pm yesterday.
The Age reports that Sergeant Ken Anderson said the pool was fenced. “There’s a pool fence there but whether there was a gate or not I don’t know.”
His death follows the drowning of a four-year old pool in Sydney on the weekend.
8. QLD egg producer fined after free-range eggs found not to be free range at all.
Darling Downs Fresh Eggs has been fined $250,000 after an investigation found its “free range” chickens were permanently confined indoors.
The Federal Court ruled yesterday that Darling Downs Fresh Eggs “purposely mislabelled its eggs as free range” reports Nine News.
An investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found all hens were permanently housed in barns and never had access to an outdoor range because the doors were kept shut.
The RSPCA says that there are about 16.3 million hens in Australia with 11 million are confined to battery cages smaller than a sheet of A4 paper, the RSPCA advised.
9. Schapelle Corby tells parole officers she is not pregnant, despite persistent rumours.
Schapelle Corby has reported for her monthly parole hearing and has denied rumours she is pregnant.News Limited reports that the 38-year old told her parole officers that despite the rumours in the press she was not pregnant, and did not have a boyfriend. She said that in fact she had just put on weight.
According to The Herald Sun she said “No, I am not. How could I be pregnant? I don’t have a boyfriend”.
She told parole officers that while her former boyfriend, Ben Panangian, was now free from jail she wasn’t with him.
She said she does not work, she just spends time “at home” and she goes surfing.
10. Calls to teach teens about egg-freezing.
A leading fertility specialist has called for egg-freezing to become a part of the school curriculum.
Dr Devora Liberman said that that children should start learning about family planning from as young as nine years old.
Speaking at the Fertility Society of Australia conference in Canberra she said there is a finite time when women can have families so you need to start planning as early as you can,”
“It’s much easier to get a woman pregnant when they are younger than older,” Dr Liberman said.
She told the conference that Australians don’t seem to understand that “40 is not the new 21 when it comes to your fertility.”
She called on any curriculum changes to be equally targeted at men.
“The single biggest reason that women give for freezing their eggs is that they don’t have a suitable partner. It’s also about getting men to understand that women’s fertility is finite,” she said.
“It’s important to start having these conversations earlier,” she said.
