Attention. 5 + 5 + 5 does NOT equal 15 any more.

Listen up, people.

5 + 5 + 5 is NOT 15. Got that?

A third grade maths test on Reddit has sparked an absolute sh*t-fight. Names are being called. Insults are being thrown. IQ levels are being questioned.

On this particular maths test, a student was asked to work out the solution for 5 x 3. The student showed the answer of 15, and that they reached the answer by adding 5 + 5 + 5.

The teacher marked it wrong, and wrote ‘3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15’.

But it didn’t stop there. The student had also been asked to draw an array (a systematic arrangement, like rows or columns) to solve 4 x 6. They drew six rows of four marks, and answered 24.

WRONG.

According to the anal teacher, it should have been FOUR rows of SIX marks, which equals 24.

And so the war on the Reddit thread began. Half of the commenters called the teacher all kinds of names, mainly in the arena of ‘stupid’ and ‘bad teacher’. On the other hand, all the commenters familiar with the primary school teaching system defended the teacher, saying they were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing.

Apparently, the teacher is laying foundations for more complicated maths in the future. The question ‘5 x 3’ should be five groups of three, and not three groups of five (which the child used as ‘5 + 5 + 5’). This will help the student in the future when they have more complicated questions, or are multiplying more than two figures.

Supposedly.

We just reckon the kid should have gotten a bonus point for all those right answers.
