The media treatment of politicians is appalling. It's not the point that the comments were rude, yes that is expected, it's the point that these comments are sexist. You may think that these things that were said about Ms Gillard aren't sexist but calling her a witch is a prime example of this sexism. It's derogatory connotations are that of an old woman, hag, ugly, evil and being burnt at the stake. How is this not sexist? Yes they were also criticising her decisions as a PM but they didn't have to drop words that screamed SEXIST.
I'm 15 and this makes me lose faith in humanity. She was the first female PM and we treated her like a rabid dog, someone even referred to her as a dog. This really disgusts me to see anyone treated as such and I really admire Julia Gillard for her resilience.

Ok, honestly, some of these comments are ridiculous.
Yes the things that were said about Gillard are not pleasant, but every PM or person of authority has to put up with that. Sorry to break it to everyone but this is a free country and nobody is perfect - so obviously opinions (whether they be negative or positive) are guaranteed to be voiced. The thing that really frustrates me though is that this is seen as more of an issue BECAUSE she is a woman. I am a female and I find it insulting that if these comments (and much worse) were said about Tony Abbott, no one would make a big deal about it - because he is a man. May I also point out that the vast majority of the "horrifically sexist" remarks in this video were not about Julia being a woman, but rather about her politics and her as a Prime Minister.
I think the question we should be asking Australia is "What point have we come to where nothing even slightly bad can be said about a woman without it being classified as misogyny?"

Yes negative comments are made about politicians all the time, and Julia Gillard is no more immune to this than any other, but the point of it is that comments should be about her policies, not about her 'big red box,' or her looks. Not about her being a woman? Have you ever seen a photo of Gough Whitlam? Did people publicly comment on his looks as if that were in some way relevant at all, in any possible way, to his ability as a prime minster? NO. Why? Because he is a man
-Asking if tax payers pay for her tampons? -The construction of a fake menu based on unflattering comments about her breasts, thighs and 'big red box?' -Abbott saying that someone needs to make an honest woman out of her -a 'menopausal monster'
As a woman, and to a woman, you are throwing your own sex under the bus.
