Retired Olympic swimmer Geoff Huegill and his wife of seven years, Sara, have announced their “amicable” separation.
The 39-year-old told fans in a statement on Instagram on Friday, saying the pair would “remain friends”.
“It is with a heavy heart that after 13 years together, Sara and I have made the decision to amicably separate,” his statement read.
“We continue to remain friends as our focus will always be about providing a positive, loving and beautiful future to our two girls.”
In the accompanying caption, the Olympian said a “special thanks” to those “who continue to support us through this next chapter of our lives”.
Geoff and Sara, who works as a publicist, were married in 2011 after several years of dating. The couple have two daughters together, Milla, six, and Gigi, four.
Geoff won silver in the 4×100-metre medley relay and bronze in the 100m butterfly at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He retired after the 2004 Athens Olympics, but made a comeback in 2009, choosing to retire again in 2012.
He stood by his wife when she was accused of shoplifting in May this year, posting a supportive message to Instagram after the story became public.
“We all trip over and make mistakes and unfortunately, we let others down. But that doesn’t make us bad people,” he wrote.
