As thousands of Australians gathered across the country in vigils in the wake of the brutal death of 22-year-old Eurydice Dixon, Sydney’s own vigil was renamed to ensure all victims of gendered violence were honoured.
Buzzfeed reporter Gina Rushton reported on Monday organisers of the Sydney vigil for Eurydice Dixon had changed the name of the event to ‘Vigil for all Victims of Gendered Violence’.
She reports this was in line with “the wishes of her family that her death not be over politicised and in light of the fact that Qi Yu was murdered just days earlier”.
On Wednesday, News Corp reported a 19-year-old Sydney man was charged with the murder of his 28-year-old Qi Yu, who went missing ten days ago. Ms Yu’s body has still not been found.
According to Destroy The Joint, there have been 29 women just like Eurydice Dixon who have died this year.
In an interview with Fairfax, the Melbourne vigil’s organiser Tiara Shafiq said Eurydice’s family requested for the event to be non-political.
“We are here for reflection. Mourning, grieving and coming together,” she told the news outlet.
“In the future we will look to take action. But tonight is a moment to reflect.
As thousands gathered to stand up for violence against women in all its forms, Melbourne’s Town Hall was lit up in orange light.
Safety in inner-Melbourne will be reviewed after the shock murder of 22-year-old Eurydice Dixon in a park less than a kilometre from her home.
The City of Melbourne, state government and police will meet on Monday to examine measures such as lighting, CCTV and the positioning of protective services officers, according to the Herald Sun.
An aspiring comedian, Ms Dixon was walking home after performing at the Highlander Bar in the CBD when she was raped and murdered at North Carlton’s Princes Park sports field.
