Content warning: This story includes descriptions of domestic violence that may be distressing to some readers.

Her name was Drew Douglas.

She was in her 30s. She was a mum to four children. She had given birth to her fourth child just a month ago.

NSW ambulance paramedics arrived at a home in St Marys in Sydney's West around 6:45am on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found Drew with stab wounds to her chest.

She was treated by paramedics but died at the scene due to her serious injuries

Watch: women and violence, the hidden numbers. Post continues below.

Approximately 45 minutes later, a 35-year-old man from St Marys was arrested at Campbelltown Police Station and held in custody. The man, Shaun King, who police say is Drew's partner, had presented himself to the station.

He has subsequently been charged with one count of murder.

Following the death of Drew, police have confirmed a welfare call was made to authorities nearly 10 hours before she was allegedly murdered.

King rang police about 8.40pm on Tuesday. Assistant Commissioner Leanne McCusker said police received the phone call from King over concerns for his own welfare but officers did not attend the home.

There were no threats of violence made during the call. Police said there was a history of domestic violence in the couple's relationship, but there were no pending charges or apprehended violence orders in place.

"I don't believe it [the triple-0 call on Wednesday morning] was made by the victim but other members inside the house," Assistant Commissioner McCusker said to reporters.

"Domestic and family violence is a significant concern across the community. It's something we take seriously with strong protocols in place, but certainly from that whole community perspective, as a community need to do more."

The lack of police response to the call is now under examination, as part of a critical incident investigation.

Tributes have begun flowing in for Drew, with loved ones saying their family is now "ripped apart".

"I'm broken, shattered and numb. My family does not deserve this, my sister didn't deserve this."

Drew is the 35th woman to die from alleged domestic violence this year, as per Destroy The Joint

That is 35 too many.
