'What’s the actual difference between PRP and PRF?' Everything to know about the latest injectable treatments.

Thanks to our brand partner, HAIR AND SKIN SCIENCE

Let’s talk about hair loss.

It’s not a topic that most people want to think about, yet it affects up to 40 per cent of women by the time they’re 50 and more than 50 per cent of all males — meaning it’s totally normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.

Why it happens can differ from person to person as well. Genetics, emotional or physical stress, pregnancy, medication and nutrition imbalance can all play a part. However, for some people, it’s also just a normal part of ageing.

But what's hair growth actually got to do with the latest injectable beauty treatments? And what the heck is PRP and PRF?

Well, PRP and PRF treatments are two treatment options that actually help stimulate hair regrowth and skin rejuvenation, and thanks to Kim Kardashian's signature vampire facial moment, are all the buzz on the beauty streets.

Here's everything you need to know about the treatments and how they work... and more importantly, how to tell if it might be an option for you.

So, what's the process?

First of all, if you’ve noticed significant hair loss or balding, it’s always best to first consult with your doctor or dermatologist to help understand the cause and ensure that it’s not a sign of any greater health concerns.

PRP and PRF treatments are widely popular to help with hair regrowth and are a less invasive option compared to other cosmetic procedures.

Hair and Skin Science is the largest provider of PRP hair loss and skin rejuvenation in Australia. They also offer the more evolved PRF treatment, another option for helping stimulate hair regrowth.

Dr. Cara Ting, an expert from Hair and Skin Science, describes how “almost 60 per cent of our client base are women experiencing hair loss” so their clinics are well-versed in helping women in this area.

What’s the difference between PRP and PRF?

PRP and PRF stand for Platelet Rich Plasma and Platelet Rich Fibrin respectively, which are both effective treatments for a wide range of conditions, including hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma treatment involves drawing a small amount of blood, then processing it by spinning it at high speed in a centrifuge (which is a fancy scientific machine that separates components in a fluid). This solution is then injected back into the treatment area, where the growth factors from the platelets help to regenerate cells.

Platelet Rich Fibrin treatment is similar to PRP but also makes use of more stem cells, white blood cells and fibrin from the blood to increase the healing potential.

Blood is still drawn but spun more slowly and uses a carrier to keep it in a liquid form. This slower spinning means that platelets are released more slowly over time, instead of all at once.

It also means that the resulting PRF solution typically has 10 times more concentration of platelets compared to the concentration found in PRP. PRF is essentially an evolution of the PRP treatment and has been developed to deliver even better results.

What are the benefits of these types of treatments?

PRP and PRF can both be used for a wide range of applications, including hair regrowth. It’s a non-surgical and natural process, with little to no downtime and can suit a wide range of hair loss concerns. The injections are done using an incredibly fine needle into the thinning areas, targeting the root of the hair follicles. It’s also done in combination with micro needling across the entire scalp, which can further encourage blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles.

The treatments are designed to encourage regrowth, as well as increasing hair count and thickness, meaning that any new growth blends in naturally and means healthier hair all around. Dr. Ting expresses how woman are "becoming more aware that hair loss is actually quite common and are learning about the power of PRP and PRF".

The healing properties of a PRP or PRF treatment can also be used to help address skin concerns such as post acne scarring, wrinkles and lines, hyperpigmentation all the way up to aiding in post-surgery recovery or sports injuries.

How do PRP and PRF compare to other cosmetic treatments?

Both PRP and PRF are minimally invasive, don’t involve surgery and don’t use any fillers or injectables (if that’s something that isn’t for you).

They can also be used in conjunction with other hair regrowth methods for maximum results. The process is completely safe, since the blood used in the treatment is your own.
