"I can't go through with the wedding..." The royal couple that almost never was.

A new royal biography is peddling a secret that we all already knew.

In news that will shock no one, Prince Charles nearly didn’t go through with his fairy tale wedding. Because he was in love with Camilla.

And apparently, all the terrible details will be revealed in Catherine Mayer’s juicy new (unauthorised) biography ‘Charles: Heart of a King’.

Mayer’s writes that Prince Charles wailed: “I can’t go through with it…I can’t do it,” to one of his closest confidants.

The Prince added that Lady Di, the future princess to whom he’d popped the question after a (very) brief courtship, was “not the jolly country girl he had assumed,” but rather a deeply troubled young woman suffering from a serious eating disorder.

In fact, Mayer’s book claims that a member of the Prince’s inner circle described the Prince as “desperate,” on the eve of his 1981 wedding.

In another news flash that everyone saw coming, the biography claims Princess Di also had her doubts about the Prince.

In one scandalous section, we learn that Lady Di found a bracelet intended for Camilla Parker Bowles, just months before their pending nuptials.

How did she know? Well, the bracelet was engraved with the letters ‘GF’, which she believed to stand for ‘Girl Friday,’ a nickname the Prince had given Camilla. But wait, the plot thickens. The initials may also have stood for ‘Gladys’ and ‘Fred,’ the vomit-inducing pet names the Prince and Ms Parker Bowles had given each other.

Unfortunately, as the future princesses confidants shared, it was too late to pull out of the wedding. Her face was already on the tea towels.

And that, as we should tell our daughters, is the problem with marrying a Prince. Your fate can be sealed by merchandise.

I was a kid when they got married and I remember it was on TV all day! I was really annoyed because I wanted to watch cartoons or whatever. Everyone was going on and on about this royal "romance" and I remember my mother scoffing "they don't love each other, it's an arranged marriage, all the royal marriages are." So we never understood why people were so shocked when the rumours of unhappiness, affairs etc came out, you only have to look through history to know that the majority of royal marriages have been arranged, admittedly some did love each other eg Victoria and Albert, and others fell in love with the person arranged for them but the fact is if some prince falls in love with the scullery maid he is not going to be allowed to marry her. Admittedly I think some of the modern royals marry for love now, but I think that's because some of the royal families have realised from couples like Charles bad diana how disastrous these arranged marriages can be, in historical terms the couples may have still been miserable but the public and press wouldn't necessarily find out, but nowadays if one is having an affair or miserable they can't hide it from the press so I think some of the royal families have realised now that it may be better for them to marry for love. I do get the sense that William and Kate, as well as Fred and Mary have some real chemistry. I think probably the same with Andrew and Fergie but I think they were allowed to marry because he wasn't going to be king and in any case if I recall correctly she has some upperclass credentials.
In the case of Charles and Diana not only was it obviously arranged it would have been quite acceptable for him to have mistresses, not that all princes have had mistresses but it would have been acceptable and almost expected in royal circles. I think it is silly to compare these situations with ordinary folk getting married, when royal marriage was traditionally about consolidating power, creating allegiances with the right countries etc, they were never about love but if the couple happened to love each other that was a nice little bonus.

I just find it really naive when people are shocked by all this, didn't they do history at school?

Ugh, the schmozzle could have been avoided if the palace had just let Charles marry Camilla in the first place.

I think they split, Charles joined the navy and Camilla married Parker-Bowles. In any event, Camilla is obviously the woman Charles loves. I'm glad it worked out for them.
