Oh, honey no.
Former Real Housewives of New York star, Bethenny Frankel wants you to know that she’s so slim she can fit into her four-year-old’s clothing. The 43-year-old adult woman squeezed into her daughter Bryn’s pyjamas this week and shared a photo on Instagram.
“This is my daughter’s nightgown and PJ shorts,” her caption read. “Think we’re ready to start sharing clothes yet?”
Bethany Frankel, founder of Skinny Girl cocktails intended the post as a joke, but her Instagram followers didn’t see the funny side at all. Many expressed their concern at what ‘point’ the reality TV star was trying to make; others suggested that fitting into a toddler’s clothing was an alarming eating disorder indicator.
“That’s crazy Bethenny eat some food,” added Instagram follower Jazz Maica.
“When your face is bigger than your ass, thats a disorder,” wrote Instagram follower ThoseThingsILove.
And these comments are from the more pleasant end of the spectrum. It was clear from the reaction of Frankel’s followers that many found the hidden message in her post insulting. Followers perceived that Frankel was ‘showing off’ by proving her body is as slim and tiny as a child’s and that she was indicating that the pursuit of child-like thinness was a positive thing.
Frankel responded to the backlash by posting a response on Twitter shortly after. “BREAKING NEWS! World Scandal: Former reality star, failed talk show host & cocktail maven jokes by wearing her kids’ pjs! #itcantbetrue,” she tweeted. “When ur 4 year old peanut says ‘mommy please put my dress on’ & giggles uncontrollably, u do what ur told,” Frankel said.
Frankel has previously spoken publicly about her battle with her weight, revealing during an interview, “Food was my best friend or enemy.” In 2011, she admitted she would starve herself then binge on unhealthy foods to try to maintain the slim figure she uses to promote her diet self-help books and line of Skinny Girl Cocktails.
Interestingly, the comments Frankel received were equally skinny-shaming as they were encouraging. Many of her followers on social media praised the star for being so thin that she could fit into the tiny pyjamas.
Now, playing dress-ups, and lingering a little too long over glittery hairclips and bangles is one thing. Frankel isn’t the first mother to get swept up in the pretty excitement of the clothes little kids wear and wish she too could wear tutus and cartoons 24/7.
But does this set a dangerous new precedent in how mother’s bodies should look? Are we now moving beyond a size 0 expectation and into pressuring women to actually be child’s size. Seriously, at what point does the pursuit of slim actually reach an end? Because this, is kind of ridiculous.
While trying to share a fun family moment, has Bethenny Frankel accidentally set a new precedent?
