It’s one thing for the paparazzi to ‘catch’ or ‘discover’ images of celebrities before the Photoshop wand has been waved…. and quite another for a famous female celebrity to send an un-retouched photo out into the world voluntarily.
And that is exactly what American pop singer, Colbie Caillat has done in her new music video, ‘Try’. Colbie has created a powerful video that shows what actually goes on before you see the air-brushed, perfection of celebrities on a screen. She artfully peels back the layers of computer make-over magic to reveal what she actually looks like, instead of the glossy version her marketing team prefer.
Colbie told Elle that it was American singer-songwriter and record producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds who gave her the idea for the powerful clip. The idea came after Colbie told Kenneth about the pressures she felt to be beautiful and flawless at all times. She told him that even though she didn’t want to conform to the pressures, she went along with it because it made her fans and her PR people happy.
“[Kenneth] started laughing, and said, we’re not going to do that. That’s not you, and that’s ridiculous of them to ask,” she told Elle.
“He said, ‘Let’s write about exactly what they’re asking you to do—to change yourself.”
The video sends out a powerful message about breaking down the standards we hold up against women, and against ourselves. It shows the raw beauty behind all make-up and Photoshopped images – like this one.
It’s not about being fake, or made-up, or being who society tells you to be. It’s about being true to who you are because, from the words of Colbie, “I like you.”

Not true. Look closely - she is actually wearing lip gloss, foundation, light eye shadow and possibly a bit of blusher in the "no makeup" end shots.
Wow. What an awesome and beautiful clip. I spend so much time picking apart my reflection in the mirror but this has genuinely been the slap in the face I needed. We ARE beautiful for so many reasons that aren't just skin deep. Thank you.
