The wrong shoe theory is the key to good style. Here's what you need to know.

Fashion is all about experimenting and forcing yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

But if you're anything like me, you're guilty of playing it way too safe far too often. Instead of reaching for something bold, you likely find yourself sticking to the same neutral colour palette again and again.

Watch Leigh Campbell apply the wrong shoe theory to her own wardrobe. Post continues below.

So if you struggle to add personality to your outfits, the wrong shoe theory could be your answer.

Popularised by TikTok creator and stylist, Allison Bornstein, this trend encourages people to create unexpected outfit combinations by deliberately mismatching their shoes.

It might sound intimidating, but the results are pure magic.

What is the 'wrong shoe theory'?

As the name suggests, the wrong shoe theory is all about picking footwear that clashes or contrasts with your outfit instead of going for the usual or expected choice.

Think chunky "dad" sneakers with a delicate sundress — the unexpectedness of it all helps create some cool visual contrasts.

That’s why it’s called the "wrong" shoe theory—because these shoes aren’t supposed to match perfectly with certain outfits. But that’s exactly what makes the look work.

Of course, there’s a method to the madness. So before you start pairing your work slacks with Birks, let’s explore some outfit combos to ease you into this style.

Outfit formulas using the wrong shoe theory.

Crocs and a maxi dress.

Crocs — people either love 'em or hate 'em. I’m definitely in the love camp. They might not be the most stylish, but nothing beats the comfort of a good pair of Crocs. If you’re looking to dress them up, try pairing them with a flowy maxi dress. It’s a great way to turn a simple outfit into something eye-catching. For winter, go with a cosy knit dress, and for summer, choose a linen style.

Flats and cargo shorts.

Flats are making a big comeback, so it’s time to embrace them. Luckily, they’re pretty easy to style. While you might usually pair ballet flats with a feminine skirt or slip dress, they really stand out when matched with something more masculine, like tailored shorts or even jorts.

Heels and flared jeans.

When I say heels and flared jeans, go to your closet and grab the brightest pair of heels you have. This look works best when you match vibrant shoes with a pretty minimal outfit. The key is to create contrast, so the shoes should stand out as deliberately mismatched.

Sneakers and a tailored blazer.

I love a good pair of sneakers and I especially love a tailored blazer, however, I've never thought of pairing the two together. This is a great option if you work in a more casual workplace, or you want to look presentable while still feeling comfortable.

Statement boots and a hoodie.

Now THIS is a look. While the boots make a bold statement on their own, pairing them with something casual like a hoodie makes the outfit look less like you're heading to a Beyoncé concert and more like you’re effortlessly chic every day.

At the end of the day, the wrong shoe theory is all about having fun. The idea is to break the rules, so don’t overthink it.
