A countdown of the top 25 books for kids.

“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea…”

Some of our favourite childhood memories come from books.

We snuggled up on the couch, being read to by our parents. Then we learned to read ourselves, we felt proud and oh, so grown-up. And later, as the books got bigger, we felt the joy of being totally absorbed into another world.

Not many things can give you that feeling. Reading can.

Dymocks Book Lovers have put together a list of the top 51 children’s books (or book series) of all time. We’ve got the top 25 for you here.

Does your childhood favourite make the cut?

Anne of Green Gables surprises me. There's not much in it to appeal to the modern child. I would guess it's one that adults buy for children.

I'm really pleased it's on there, it was my favourite as a kid, and I still enjoy reading it from time to time. My friend's 11 year old daughter loves a series of books (not sure what they're called) about 'olden days' girls, so I gave her 'Anne' for her birthday this year.

'Our Australian Girl' series is good as are the 'My Australian Story' series. Both series are written by top Aussie children's authors.
