Li Na wins Australian Open.


China’s Li Na has won the Australian Open women’s final against Czech Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova. In her third attempt of taking out the Australian Open, 31-year-old Li Na defeated Cibulkova in straight sets, becoming the oldest winner of the women’s title.

Li is also making headlines her sense of humour today, after giving what has been coined the funniest acceptance speech in Australian Open history. Take a look:

Three dead after a shooting in a US mall


Three people have been shot dead in the Columbia mall in the American state of Maryland. Police were called to the mall on Saturday afternoon where they found three bodies, including one that was lying near a gun and ammunition, which Police believe was the gunman.

Two other people with minor injuries were transported to a local hospital.

No more details have been released.

6.1 earthquake strikes off the coast of Java. 


A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck off the Indonesian city of Java on Saturday afternoon. The quake caused dozens of building to collapse, including 16 homes and a mosque.

So far there are no reports of casualties.

French President splits with partner after cheating scandal.

French President Franncois Hallonde, has split with his partner of seven years, journalist Valerie Trierweiler. The news comes two-weeks after Closer Magazine reported that the 59-year-old President was having an affair with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet.

Lightning kills seven students in Africa.


Seven high school students have been killed and fifty-one injured after lightning struck a classroom in the small African country of Burundi. As many as 500 houses were also destroyed during the ferocious storm, which government officials have described as ‘an exceptional disaster’.

Last week, lightning killed four people in Burundi.

Gosh what are the odds of lightening striking and killing people twice in as many weeks in that same place.

Not sure about the odds, but I do know that lightning DOES strike twice because it will always seek out the place with the least 'resistance' and that place is the place it has just hit.
