As they emerged from the chapel as husband and wife, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared their first kiss.

And boy, was it romantic.

In a lovely personal twist, it was actually Prince Harry’s own parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, who first defied tradition and shared a public kiss on their wedding day.

Until then, it was customary for the royal family to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate milestone family events, including weddings.

Prior to the wedding of Charles and Dianna, the newly married royal couple would just stand next to each other and wave in celebration to the gathered crowds. But on July 1981, Charles and Diana leaned into one another and shared a public, wedding day kiss for the whole world to see.

And when Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, the was once again treated to a loving smooch on that famous balcony, in fact, they were actually treated to two.

After Harry and Meghan made their way out of the chapel into a carriage, they took a 25 minute ride to St George’s Hall for their wedding reception.

Buckingham Palace announced today that the newly wed couple will now be formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – a title that has not been handed out for more than 150 years.
