Rape is, like, totally cool. As long as the sex is ‘spectacular.’

I don’t know whether to laugh, cringe or throw something so I’m going to do all three. You may want to join me after you watch this preposterous and bizarre video by someone called Kiely Williams (a 24 year old actress and singer) who has recorded a fun little song about how sexy rape can be.

If you thought this video was a bit ick, it’s like Baa Baa Black sheep compared to what Kiely has just released. Let’s try to leave aside the fact that musically, the song is appalling (if that’s possible). The message of the song and accompanying video is that it’s totally cool to have sex with someone who is unconscious and unable to consent. SO LONG AS THE SEX IS SPECTACULAR. Let’s also try to leave aside the bizarre logic gap in the song where Kiely admits she passed out and can’t remember what happened but then insists that it doesn’t matter that Nameless Dude raped her because ‘the sex was spectacular’.

The whole this is just…..well, you’ve got to watch it to truly appreciate it.

To me, it looks like a Chaser skit except not funny.

In case you can’t play the video, here are the lyrics….

Last night I was drunk
I don’t remember much
But what I do constant pictures
Thats how going I was
But he was tall and he was buying
So I gave him a trying
Said he was like a stallion
And the man wasn’t lying

Last I remember I was face down
Ass up, clothes off, broke off, dozed off
Even though I’m not sure of his name
He could get it again if he wanted
Cause the sex was spectacular
The sex was spectacular (yeaaah)
The sex was spectacular
The sex was spectacular

So it was the morning after
I couldn’t get home faster
Doing the walk of shame
In the same clothes from yesterday
I think he pulled a track out
When he was blowing my back out
What was I drinking
I cant believe I blacked out

You can say what you want but
You can call me a slut but
What he did to me last night felt so good
I must have been on drugs
I hope he used a rubber
Or I’mma be in trouble
Promise I don’t remember
Except for
Give it to me, give it to me
Ooh baby what a ride ride
Oh ride ride
So smooth like it beats
I like the heat
Ooh baby what a night night
Right right

Cause the sex was spectacular
The sex was spectacular (yeaaah)
The sex was spectacular
The sex was spectacular

Freelance journalist Judith Ireland wrote in Fairfax newspapers….

They might be old cliches, but rape myths still do the rounds with frightening regularity. From ”she was drunk” to ”she looked tarty”, ”she didn’t say no” and ”she meant yes”, rape myths hold that women provoke or deserve sexual assault – leaving perpetrators helpless or less culpable.

During this month’s airing of The Sexual Life of Us, a documentary on Australian sexuality, Felicity tells of losing her virginity, drunk at 15 in a crowded room at a party.

”I basically said no, at first, I don’t know if he heard or not, but he continued and I didn’t say anything after that, you know, I was too scared to.”

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, the strongest predictors for holding rape supportive views are being male, politically conservative and having a low income.

It should be possible for all of us (male, female, pop singer) to understand that it is rapists who are responsible for rape, not the victims.

Sure, there are grey areas sometimes. But while drunkenness may be dangerous and hinder your ability to look after yourself, it does not mean you have given up your right to say no. Sparkly undies, sexy clothing and sexy dancing may or may not be seeking attention. But they are not seeking to be raped.

In response to her critics, Kiely says: ”I wrote Spectacular and made the video to bring attention to a serious women’s health and safety issue.” Pleading the case for artistic licence, she says: ”Don’t shoot the messenger.” If she was genuinely serious about the health and safety of women, Kiely should have asked viewers to instead ignore the messenger and the myth-laden depiction of rape.

[thanks Karen]

And here is Kiely’s ridiculous response to the backlash….her reference to Cheetah Girls is something to do with a girl-power girl band she used to be in.

Oh man……

Important – if this song or any of the comments bring up any issues for you, or if you need to speak to someone please call the NSW Rape Crisis Centre on 1800 424 017.  It does not matter where about you live in Australia, they will take your call and, if need be, refer you to a service closer to home.

You people need to stop taking everything so seriously. Sounds like she's joking to me. She should have called the song "surprise sex". Surprise! That would have made me laugh even more.. I find that "I ain't no angel, I like the way you do those things to me" song more offensive because I know she's serious. They play that on Video Hits in the morning when kids are watching. She makes me want to clean my TV everytime she comes on.

The upshot is this song and video is just plain old hideous. Even if it wasn't about such horrible subject matter. The vocals are awful and the chorus is ANN-OY-ING. And is she dressed like a prostitute on purpose? Too many confusing messages in this one.

What is the most shocking thing for me is that this song doesn't depict what happened to this girl as "rape" (though it is) but as a point of PRIDE!! She says "I got so wasted and a strange man used me for sex while I was passed out, yay for me"! The message this sends is that not only is it OK for men to treat you like this, you should actually be HAPPY when they do!!!

It reminds me a bit of how angry I got a Rihanna following an interview did about the naked pictures sent by her via phone to Chris Brown while they were dating. She said something like "If a girl doesn't send naked pictures of herself to her boyfriend, I feel sorry for him". I wanted to shake her and remind her that there are some teenage girls out there who idolise her just enough to listen to what she says and she should think about that before she opens her trap!!

So I guess the one thing we can be grateful for is that this Kiely chick clearly hasn't got a good producer or manager (or talent, in my opinion) so she will disappear into obscurity soon enough and we won't have to worry about her warping children's minds any more.
