Just one suggestion - could, "She mostly took care of herself and her younger adopted brother, who was intellectually handicapped.", be amended to "who has/d an intellectual disability"? Your words reach so many people, and have the power to transform prejudices by using person-first language instead of outdated terms. Thank you for your consideration.
