I left teaching 10 years ago, not because of burn out or stress. Because 10 years ago we had a teacher overload and I couldn’t find a permanent job unless I was willing to move to a low service area or the city. A lot of peers in my cohort had the same issue. As a casual I felt like a glorified babysitter and was still working a night job just incase I couldn’t get enough teaching work. I wanted stability and a steady pay. Anyone thinking about a career outside of teaching where skills are transferable. Consider community services/casework. In NSW we have caseworkers from many different backgrounds including nurses, teachers, police. The work is still hard, there is still exhaustion and possibly burn out, bureaucracy issues. But it is also rewarding, a big pro’s list and maybe just the change you need and your still using all your skills. Plus if your already teaching in NSW gov all your leave entitlements will come with you!
