A policewoman's heartfelt plea: “All coppers just want people to take care on the roads."

“Every time you have to knock on someone’s door to have to tell them their loved one’s not coming back… takes a little piece away from us.”

Earlier this year, Victoria Police released a video, detailing the raw and emotional toll of road fatality.

After what has been a horror week on Australian roads, it is devastatingly poignant.

In the moving video, acting Senior Sergeant Sharon Darcy recounts attending the scene of a tragic car accident.

Police, paramedics, firefighters: There were people everywhere at that devastating scene. But the connection Sen-Sgt Darcy felt was deeply personal.

“There was quite a few people at the scene. But she was looking at me through the car window and just in that instant, while she was looking at me… she stopped looking,” she recalls.

The young woman involved in that accident sadly died.

Sen-Sgt Darcy’s message reminds us that it is not only those hurt or lost that are affected. The ripples are much greater.

“He kept saying to her ‘baby, come back to me, come back to me. Wake up,’ she recalls.

“And I stood in the corner and looked away and cried. And I thought, I’m not really good at this. I’m not good at this job at all.”

It is not only the families who are affected, but our emergency service workers too.

“Every time you have to knock on someone’s door to have to tell them their loved one’s not coming back,” Sen-Sgt Darcy says, “takes a little piece away from us.”

Sen-Sgt Darcy’s message is simple, and so important.

“All coppers just want people to take care on the roads. To be considerate and caring to other people on the roads,” she says.

“It’s not about road rules and regulations. It’s not about us giving out tickets. It’s about people just taking time and care to do the right thing.”
