1. PM only consulted Angus Houston on knighthood for Prince Phillip
There is unhappiness within the Liberal party ranks after news that the Prime Minister only consulted Air Chief Marshal Houston about awarding Prince Phillip an Australia Day Knighthood.
Air Chief Marshal Houston was the only other person knighted yesterday. The PM also only consulted the Chairman of the Council for the Order of Australia and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove on the appointment of Angus Houston.
The Australian reports that Liberal MPs said the decision was made without discussion with the party room.
According to the ABC one minister said “There is an old saying that when you are in a hole you should stop digging”
“Well, we’ve just punched through the Earth’s crust.”
Mr Abbott stood by the decision yesterday describing Prince Philip as an “eminently suitable recipient” for the accolade.
“Prince Philip has been a great servant of Australia, he’s been a great servant of all the countries of the Commonwealth.”
