News: President Mubarak resigns, Alanis Morrissette gives birth and 22 other photos of the week

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has addressed the country announcing he won’t re-contest the election in September, he announced he is transferring his power to vice-president Omar Suleiman. The transition will last until September, effectively ending his 30 year reign.

According to SMH:

Protesters wave their shoes in disgust after President Hosni Mubarak’s announcement

Earlier it appeared Mubarak was on the verge of stepping down as thousands of anti-regime protesters massed excitedly in Cairo’s central Tahrir Square amid rumours he would go.

Protesters reacted with fury when Mubarak revealed he would not be leaving office immediately, demanding the army join them in revolt.

Hundreds of protesters took off their shoes and brandished them at the screen on which they had seen Mubarak’s speech, an insult in Arab societies, and others chanted: “Down with Mubarak, leave, leave!”

Others called for an immediate general strike and demanded of the army, which has deployed large numbers of troops around the protest: “Egyptian army, the choice is now, the regime or the people!”
Suleiman told street protesters and strikers to head home or back to work in his first speech after Mubarak delegated him presidential powers.

Suleiman told “the youth of Egypt, its heroes, go home and go back to your jobs” in a televised statement shortly after Mubarak’s.

Mubarak said Egypt was heading “day after day” to a peaceful transfer of power and he was committed to protect the constitution until that happens.

In other news this week, at a time when models can’t possibly get any skinnier, Pepsi Co have launched their new slimmed down, skinny can of Diet Pepsi. Where? New York Fashion Week of course.

72 homes also were destroyed by bushfires in Perth, Matthew Newton appeared in court for breaching his AVO against former girlfriend, Rachael Taylor, children swum with Polar Bears in Canada and Dannii Minogue launched her fashion line ‘Project D’ at David Jones Winter catwalk show in Sydney.

Do you think Pepsi have their target market sussed or is the skinny can of Diet Pepsi subliminal advertising?

Yay for Alanis Morissette but EVER IS NOT A NAME. And if it is it's not a boy's name.
