The new star of Orange is the New Black was at the centre of Hollywood's biggest incest scandal.

The much-anticipated sixth season of Orange is the New Black has introduced us to some new faces.

After the rioting of season five, the women of Litchfield were transferred to maximum security. There, they came face-to-face with two rival gangs led by feuding sisters, Barb and Carol.

And the actress who played Barb looked a little familiar.

You see, the character of Barb is portrayed by veteran Hollywood actress, Mackenzie Phillips, whose own life story is even more harrowing than the back stories of the characters on the show.

Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, one of the singers in The Mamas & The Papas, and his first wife, Susan Adams.

A few familiar faces are staring in the new season of Orange Is The New Black…

She grew up in the rock and roll world of drugs and debauchery, and at age 12 formed her own band with three of her classmates. During one of their performances, a casting agent scouted her and she was asked to audition for a role in the 1973 cult movie, American Graffiti.

Phillips then went on to star in a bunch of movies and TV shows including the 90s Disney Channel hit, So Weird.

Then in 2009, it was revealed that Phillips had been involved in a decade long, consensual relationship with her now late father. It began when she was just 19 years old.

In an interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Phillips spoke about how she woke up on the eve of her first wedding to find her father having sex with her.

When she confronted him months later, he responded: “Raped you? Don’t you mean we made love?”.

The father and daughter continued to have sexual relations for another 10 years.

“It was the Stockholm syndrome where you begin to love your captor,” she told Winfrey, according to a CNN report. “I felt love for my father, but the moment he tried to make it a romance, I was shot into the present time.”

When she later become pregnant, and was unsure who the father was, Phillips ended the relationship.

“I was in a relationship with my son’s father as well, he knew nothing,” she told Oprah. “He’s one of the dearest men and one of the best parents to our son. He was always there for me. I came up pregnant, and I had an abortion. And I never let [John Phillips] touch me again.”

In her memoir, High on Arrival, Phillips described trying cocaine for the first time at just 11 years old. She also wrote about the times her father had taken drugs with her and the instances when he shot her up with cocaine.

Phillips’ early exposure to drugs led to a life of substance abuse and mental health problems. On August 27, 2008, she was arrested at the Los Angeles Airport and charged with possession of cocaine and heroin.

Her drug use led her to be fired from one the biggest roles of her career, playing Julie Cooper in the classic sitcom One Day At A Time.

She went on to appear in the third season of Celebrity Rehab in 2010.

After the 2008 charge, Phillips graduated from a drug rehabilitation program and became a certified substance abuse counselor.

“I have lived a life of incredible abundance, and every door that has been opened to me by grace I have slammed shut right behind me,” she told People in 2017.

“It’s time for me to get grateful for what I have and share my recovery with other people. This work is icing on a really beautiful cake.”

Many members of Phillips’ family have not forgiven her for exposing her relationship with her famous father. When she released her book in 2009, some spoke out against her and claimed it was unfair she had come forward with these allegations when her father was not around to defend himself.

But Phillips says she’s made peace with her past.

“I have to say that I loved my father, and I still do. I’ve been trying to come to terms with this very difficult past,” she told Winfrey.

“I can’t be the only one this has happened to. Someone needs to put a face on not only non-consensual incest, but consensual incest, and I know that I can’t be the only one who’s lived through this. So in finding this redemption, maybe I’m helping someone else.”
