Mamamia’s Tried and Tested series is your review of the latest to hit our desks in beauty, health and wellness. You won’t find any #sponsored content here, just honest, relatable and independent advice. This week, Mamamia's Senior Health and Beauty Writer reviews Naked Sundays SPF Serum.
Sunscreen. She's changed. She's nothing like the old thick, goopy stuff we used to ignore in the back of our beauty cabinets.
These days we have so many fancy-schmancy SPF formulas, that wearing sunscreen every day is actually now a very pleasant thing to do.
Watch: Just in case you're not up to scratch with sun safety (WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN), here's how to protect your skin from the sun. Post continues below.
One of the latest formulas making some serious noise? Naked Sundays Clear Glow Radiant Serum, $49.95.
You've seen it all over Instagram - I know, I know. It's everywhere right now - and if you're anything like me, you're eager as hell to try it.
But the questions! We have SO many questions.
What's it like in real life? How does it feel on the skin? Does it sit well under makeup? Will it take the dog for a walk? Mow the lawn on a Sunday?
That's why I decided to give it a whirl.
Wanna find out if it's really worth the hype? Strap in and read on.
Naked Sundays Clear Glow Radiant Serum, reviewed.
In case you missed all the excitement, Naked Sundays Clear Glow Radiant Serum is a clear gel sunscreen (yep! CLEAR!) that promises an invisible finish and is designed to work on any skin tone.
Now, I'm a massive fan of the Naked Sundays SPF 50 Collagen Glow Creme - it's my everyday go-to. So I was super keen to give this a shot and see how it compared.
Listen: Leigh and I unboxed Naked Sundays SPF 50 Collagen Glow Creme on You Beauty - and here are our first impressions! Post continues below.
Where should we start? The packaging??
Let's talk about the packaging first.
It comes in a weighty glass bottle (it's frosted), with a pump dispenser and a pink plastic lid. Cute!
I cracked my lid after having it for a week (not cute) - so I just have to be careful tossing it in my bag, because the dispenser thingy doesn't lock.
When it comes to the actual formula, the serum features a bunch of do-good ingredients such as squalane and Jojoba oil, as well as antioxidant extracts from Kakadu plum, tomato extract and watermelon extract.
For a dry-skinned gal like myself, this all sounds like a VERY good time, indeed. I'm notoriously flaky, so I'm going to grab whatever added hydration I can get.
As expected, it applies completely clear on the skin (it has no scent btw) - but the texture is quite different to what I expected. Like suuuper different!
When you rub it in, it feels silicone-y and velvety on the skin - almost like Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional Primer but... not? Because at the same time it kind of feels like an oil?? But somehow the finish is matte??? IDK.
While you obviously can't see it (again, clear), I did feel it on my skin for quite a while after application - like it didn't 'dry' into my skin as such.
But as someone with really thirsty skin (have I mentioned this? Maybe once or twice?), it felt pretty comfortable.
It's designed to replace your serum, moisturiser and primer - so rather than putting more moisturiser on top (felt weird to do that, you're supposed to use SPF as the last step in your routine), I waited around five minutes before applying my makeup over the top.
With makeup on (I used Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation as my base), it had a semi-matte kinda finish but at the same time my skin felt super hydrated and everything looked pretty glowy and fresh.
Here's what it looked like below (pls excuse flyaways):
I'm prone to dry patches - but everything honestly felt really moisturised and non-reptilian when I was wearing this.
My makeup stayed on my face and didn't move around as the day wore on - but I also didn't attempt re-application (I felt like it would be tricky with this serum).
I should also note - I did use a setting mist to make sure my face didn't migrate towards my chest during the day.
If you tend to get shiny on the T-zone area (or, y'know - everywhere) I'd probably suggest opting for a setting powder so things don't get too shiny Sue as the day goes on.
Should I buy Naked Sundays Clear Glow Radiant Serum?
If you're like me and have dry skin, I reckon this could be up your alley. It's one of those formulas that makes your face feel super comfortable and hydrated for more than like, two seconds - which is the dream, really.
I also didn't experience any stinging, redness or any of that BS - so if this is something you always struggle with when reaching for SPF, this could be a good option.
Now, if you're a gal with oily skin or combination skin - this might not be for you.
Oh, come on - don't give me that look!
The reason I say this is simply because while the formula does have a semi-matte finish, the lasting 'feel' of the serum on your skin might not be your favourite thing in the world - it might feel more oily than you'd like.
If this sounds like you, I'd say Naked Sundays SPF 50+ Collagen Glow Creme might be a better match. But hey - everyone's skin is different!
