'The Ordinary just launched a whole new category and I'm the first to try it.'

Mamamia’s Tried and Tested series is your review of the latest to hit our desks in beauty, health and wellbeing. You won’t find any #sponsored content here, just honest, relatable and independent advice. This week, Mamamia's Beauty Editor trials The Ordinary's Body Care range.

Are you excited? Intrigued? Already on your way to cart 'em up?

Because if there's one thing we all know about The Ordinary, it's that it's one of the few no-BS brands that just work — and some of their products have reached cult status for good reason.

They're affordable. Scientific. And you can throw 'em in your grocery basket with your taco kit.

Anyway, as I mentioned before, we're here to talk about their new category of products — and since everyone is feeling like an actual two-legged reptile right now, I have a feeling this range really couldn't have come at a better time.

Watch: You know what else I've tried before? Lube. On my face. Post continues below.

Meet: Body Care by The Ordinary.

There's a salicylic acid serum, a niacinamide serum and a moisturiser, with nothing over $24.

Yes! Serums for your cute bod.

Apparently the brand is constantly flooded with requests if certain skincare can "also be used on the body," so they decided to formulate a range of body care products so people can look after the skin on the body like they do their face. Which kind makes sense, really.

Because a lot of what you use on your face is often not the right concentration for the skin on your body, y'know?

So, is the range worth trying? I put it to the test.

What is The Ordinary's Body Care range?

The three new products have all been formulated with The Ordinary's bestselling ingredients, except in lower concentrations to make them suitable for all skin types. And yes, before you ask — they can be used on the face, too. We love multi-taskers!

But let's start with one of the body serums, shall we? The Salicylic Acid 0.5% Body Serum, $24.20, is basically *made* for those with blemish prone skin — so if you're always dealing with niggling breakouts on your back, chest or butts, this could be right up your alley.

To give you a quick rundown, it's described as a lightweight exfoliating formula that is "designed to improve skin clarity, by targeting pore congestion and smoothing skin texture." With 0.5 per cent salicylic acid, it's mean to help exfoliate dead skin cells for smoother, more blemish-free skin (without irritating side effects).

For dark spots, The Ordinary Niacinamide 5% Face & Body Emulsion, $22.20, is a multi-tasking formula that is "designed to help even the appearance of skin tone, contributing towards more radiant skin whilst smoothing texture across the face and body."

With continued use, it promises to help target the appearance of dark spots for brighter, more even-looking skin. With a five per cent concentration, this is gentle even for those with sensitive skin.

Tested on all different skin tones and types, this formula is suitable for sensitive skin and can be used on the hands, neck, chest, arms and legs.

Lastly, there's The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Inulin Body Lotion, $23.90, which is all about providing all-important barrier support for the skin’s natural microbiome.

Formulated with Inulin, a prebiotic ingredient, this lightweight body moisturiser promises lasting hydration, reducing the look of dry and flaky skin by 70 per cent (huge) and leaving the skin more hydrated in the long term.

How did you go with it?

I've been trying the range for the past few weeks, and look — it really couldn't have launched at a better time. Thanks to the current winter chill, the skin on my legs/arms/everywhere has been feeling DRY. Very puffy-pastry-like. Neglected. Hates seeing me slather so many good things on my face and just forget about everything else.

In other news, I've also been dealing with some breakouts on my back thanks to warmer layers/sweating it out in the gym once every (six months) day. Stunning.

So! I thought the Salicylic Acid 0.5% Body Serum would be right up my alley when it comes to unclogging pores, sloughing dead cells and smoothing rough skin. I used it right after I got out of the shower and focused on applying it on the backs of my arms, back, legs, etc.

The first thing I noticed was just how runny the formula is — it's literally like water. The bottle (it comes in 240mls) has a twist top, so it comes out really quick. It honestly made it kinda hard to slap on without dripping it everywhere — so just be wary of this. However, once it was... on... my skin, it felt lovely and lightweight — like I had nothing at all on my skin.

I also used the Niacinamide 5% Face and Body Emulsion on my chest (where I have some dark spots and pigmentation that I would kindly like to bugger off) and face. This comes in a smaller 100ml pump bottle and is way easier to use, in my honest opinion. The formula is quite different though, in that it's more of a milky-type lotion as opposed to a runny serum.

However, it's similarly very lightweight on the skin and sinks in beautifully. I also love that you can double down and use it on your face as well because I'm lazy and don't want to faff around with 36 products post-shower. It felt gentle, comfy and just very delightful on the skin.

Dark spot girlies, rejoice.

Now, the body moisturiser! It comes with some pretty hefty claims (ahem... reduces dryness and flaking by 70 per cent?!), so I was keen to see how it shaped up against the five million other body moisturisers I don't use.

My first impression? It's so lightweight! I was honestly expecting a heavier, richer texture so was surprised to find this was the case.

As I mentioned, I'm wildly lazy with body moisturiser and always CBF/hate the feeling of it when I have to throw on my clothes/pjs (GROSS), but this isn't one of those moisturisers. There's zero residue, and it sinks in really beautifully without any stickiness, greasiness or any of that palaver.

Hydration station.

It's wonderfully hydrating and leaves the skin feeling smooth, bouncy and soft after the first use. Especially the thirsty legs! Gosh, they were in an embarrassing need of hydration. The best part? The hydration lasts.

It also feels important to share that my legs usually get really annoyingly itchy and irritated after my showers (I'm fully aware the water is too hot — I know, I know) but my skin is feeling calm, comfortable and hydrated thanks to this guy (Is it the inulin? Maybe it's the inulin??).

The verdict.

As can be expected with most products from The Ordinary, this range does exactly as it says it's going to do. The products just work. Without the flashy packaging, fluffy marketing or hyped-up advertisements. These science-backed formulations stay true to The Ordinary's difference — they're transparent, honest and use proven ingredients that do what you need them to do, without costing a stupid amount of money.

The perfect addition to any winter skincare routine, if you've neglected your poor cute bod and struggle with issues like breakouts or very dry skin or just want to give it a little love, this is a great place to start.
