A moment for the random friendships that flourish in the Met Gala bathrooms.

The most anticipated event on the fashion calendar is just around the corner, with the 2024 Met Gala about to kick off.

But everyone knows that after the celebs weave their way the red carpet and into the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the event, the real party goes down... in the bathrooms.

Because let's be real: that's where the strongest friendships are often forged.

Who hasn't entered the women's bathroom on a night out and exited with three new besties? That's on girlhood.

Every year, Met Gala guests have to abide by the rules Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour sets out — and she discourages any selfies being taken at the actual event. However, some celebs are known to get around these guidelines by taking a cheeky toilet selfie.

And it's here that some truly random friendships are showcased; the kind of friendships that keep me up at night.

Let's begin with arguably the most iconic Met Gala bathroom selfie of all time: Kylie Jenner's massive group pic from 2017.

The selfie was a mash-up of celebrities featuring Kylie's sisters Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian, models Lily Aldridge and Slick Wood, musicians A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean, along with rapper P. Diddy.

But it also featured a couple of random inclusions: namely — Paris Jackson and Marvel superhero Brie Larson... who, tbh, also looked a little confused to be there.

Some have claimed that Kylie was the first celeb to embrace the Met bathroom selfie, but this isn't exactly true.

A year earlier, fashion icon Alexa Chung captured and posted a selfie of herself with friend and fellow fashionista Poppy Delevigne, which was photobombed by actress Elle Fanning.

Plus if you squint, you can see Rita Ora in the background.

Perfect, no notes.

That same year, a bunch of supermodels took a selfie together. Nothing to see here until you realise that behind them stands Lady Gaga having some sort of existential crisis.

You okay, Mother Monster???

My personal favourite Met bathroom pic, though, is this true mixed lolly bag of famous women.

In 2022, models Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Winnie Harlow were caught gabbing with Billie Eilish, Jenna Ortega and YouTuber Emma Chamberlain.

I love all these ladies but have to wonder: what on earth are they talking about?? Ah, to be a fly on this bathroom wall.

Then there were the girl gangs that we never knew we needed.

Case in point: this selfie featuring Stella McCartney, Kate Bosworth, Dakota Johnson and Maggie Gyllenhaal from the 2017 event.

Or this iconic selfie between Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Timothée Chalamet, Ashton Sanders and Kenneth Nicholson.

Then there were the smokers.

In 2017, Bella Hadid set tongues wagging for puffing on a cigarette in a photo with Lara Stone, Paris Jackson and (inexplicably) Ruby Rose, as the foursome sat on the bathroom floor.

Rita Ora made another bathroom appearance capturing Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson lighting up a cigarette in the bathroom which she captioned 'sex on legs'.

In the background appears to be Armie Hammer puffing on a vape.

This sparked outrage since the Metropolitan Museum of Art banned smoking in 2003.

And clearly, the Met's organisers wanted to put a stop to the bathroom smokers. In 2023, Billie Eilish shared a selfie of all the signs in the bathroom to flag that smoking was most definitely banned.

In the pic, Billie stood beside Elle Fanning (again!), Maya Hawke and Halle Bailey.

Fingers crossed that celebs take the hint that smoking in the Met Gala bathroom is strictly prohibited this year.

But we can't say the same for taking selfies.... especially if Rita Ora or Elle Fanning are around.
