When it was announced earlier this week that Sam Frost had landed an recurring role on Home and Away, some were interested in how she would handle the job without any formal acting training.
Now radio host and long-time Summer Bay resident, Kate Ritchie, who now works in radio, has stood up for The Bachelorette alum.
On Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty show yesterday, the 38-year-old said she didn’t understand why people were being so critical of Frost and “mean-spirited” about her latest career move.
“There have been a lot of people who have joined that show without any training and some have left without any training,” she explained to her listeners.
“They’ve gone on to do many things or they remain there because it’s a very worthy career in itself.
“What’s everyone meant to do? Turn down opportunities because they’re worried about what everyone is going to think of it?”
Frost, herself, defended her move into Summer Bay on Instagram on Thursday night.
“I am not afraid to challenge myself, to push through barriers,” she wrote. “I work incredibly hard professionally & personally to constantly grow, learn and evolve.”
“I have chosen to live my life embracing opportunities & challenges with open arms. It may work, it may not… but at least I can say I was brave enough to give it a shot.”
Earlier this week, Frost told Confidential to land the role, she went through the same “rigorous” audition process as everyone else.
“I grew up watching Home And Away and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be on set and part of the cast,” she said.
“I got asked [to audition] while I was working on Hell’s Kitchen. I auditioned against a whole bunch of people and that’s why I thought I wouldn’t get the role.”
“After my second audition, when they finally said, ‘You got the job!’ I screamed. I was so excited.”
In more good news, this week the former Bachelorette also announced she’s in a relationship with her long-term friend Dave Bashford.

Oh here we go. People commenting on this story are not necessarily mean spirited. Few of the comments are. Most are just genuinely confused as to how she got the role. I'm one of those people. I don't think she should have turned it down. No way. I actually like Sam Frost. I like her personality. It didn't translate to radio unfortunately but I genuinely gave her and Rove a shot. But the show bombed. That's not mean spirited. That's the truth. It wasn't successful. The public are not idiots. We are just questioning whether it was her acting skills that genuinely got her the role as she has never acted before and as consumers of Home and Away, the public have a right to weigh in on who they watch every night. Not every comment is bullying. Why is that so hard to understand?
I agree with Kate, I don't understand why people are being so mean spirited about it either. This is such a great opportunity and Sam seams to have the right attitude. I don't think most people would deny themselves an opportunity like that if it came their way.
And probably truth be told the reason that the majority of people go on these reality shows
