Experts share the 10 haircuts and colours that will dominate 2017.

The ticking over of a New Year inspires some to work on their inner-strength, mindfulness and health. Then there are the rest of us who’ll be satisfied with a bit of a hair change.

Now, now, let’s not get judgey – both are as equally important in my eyes.

Here to help you and your strands get off to a smashing start are some of the hair industry’s most respected experts. They’ve gazed into their crystal balls (or maybe just used their years of knowledge) to share the cuts and colours you’ll be begging your hairdresser for this year.

Haircuts.

The one-length-bob.

“This above-the-shoulder haircut is the perfect palate cleanser. It eliminates any old layering or shape you may be tired of and brings you to the perfect combination of ease and style. It’s easy because even if you do zero styling, everything falls right to that perfect blunt line and it looks strong and cool,” – Educator for Oribe Hair Care, Adam Livermore.

Embrace ‘natural’.

“I hear you say ‘but that’s alright for you, Anthony’ but I’m here to tell you that going natural is super cool for 2017. I’ve seen this natural texture sneaking its way back onto the red carpets and high fashion international campaigns which means that it’s a definite trend. Someone who wears this well is the the beautiful Charlize Theron.

"The secret is always making sure you have a variation of shattered layers within the interior of your haircut. The best thing about this style is that you can even just wash and wear your hair and it will look fashionable and, dare I say, a little French-looking.” - Anthony Nader, celebrity stylist and founder of RAW Salon in Surry Hills Sydney

Heavy fringes.

“This is a good addition to any hair length, adds great shape and is a very strong look. You can play around with how it's worn, whether it is swept to the side, parted in the centre or featured heavy and forward. This also works well if you wear your hair up or down and is fantastic for women who want to have this style but don't want a dramatic cut.” - Joey Scandizzo, ELEVEN Australia co-Creative Director and three-time Hairdresser of the Year

Long bangs.

"Cheek bangs on long hair are my thing right now, with this snip taking long hair to a whole other level. My inspiration is Cher! I cut Heidi Klum’s longer - more chin than cheek-length - bang and it’s my favourite cut on her. I’m doing it a lot at present." - Wendy Iles, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Iles Formula

The shag.

“A shag is another effortless and very cool option for hair that has more texture or wave. The cut should have a rounded shape... Fullest in the middle with very soft ends and bangs. It's a beautiful way to highlight all the best parts of the face, and a beautiful long neck.” - Adam Livermore.

The modern bob.

"This is shaping up to be the dominating style in 2017, with the option of a fringe, contemporary movement and style for edginess. (Post continues after gallery.)

Celebrities rocking lobs.

"To give this hairstyle versatility from day-to-day, use a ghd curve classic wave wand, $230, for body movement and waves… and use your fingers to add texture by tousling your completed style.” - Jayne Wild, ghd ambassador

Colour trends

Cool toned colours

“Colours trending for 2017 will see soft blues, pinks and mauves making a big impact. These cooler tones are great for light blondes who want to take away a little brightness. I just love the natural dark blonde also as I find this incredibly chic." - Wendy Iles

Brunettes with a fiery twist.

“Brunettes will have a gentle embrace of red tones. It’s these touches of cerise that will warm up browns with a ruby-coloured glow. You will also be seeing soft panels of cool raspberry reds intertwined through the darker hues for subtle glimpses of excitement as the hair moves.” - Ian Michael Black, AVEDA Global Artistic Director for hair colour.

Lived-in blonde.

“Lived in blondes are still at the forefront of the hair world. Low maintenance but still blonde.” - Jaye Edwards, founder of Edwards and Co.

Think blonde hair with darker roots and hints of chocolate brown and caramel throughout. Minimal touch-ups? Tick.

Outside the box.

“For those who like bold statements, this season’s must-have colours are bright magentas and vivid blues melded together. The Eclipting™ technique allows for these two colours to play off one another to show a mix of warm and cool tones on one beautiful head of hair. Think deeper blue roots softly blending into magenta ends.” - Ian Michael Black

Tiger eye hair.

“Auburn tones with a tiger eye effect will be big. It’s time to embrace the warmth - warmer tones reflect light differently giving off more variation in tone. Done right, people will be in awe.” - Jaye Edwards

The reason French women always look so stylish is because they don't colour their hair. Why do WE colour our hair in such tacky, garish ways??

I would love to show Adam Livermore what my hair would look like cut like in #1, with "zero styling". I doubt anyone would describe it as "strong and cool".
