Why people are calling this famous tennis player's family the new Kardashians.

There’s just something we love about a famous family (other than the royals, of course).

And when a sparkly new surname bursts on to the scene we find ourselves utterly obsessed – spending hours upon hours knee-deep in Instagram feeds and scouring the internet for every recorded interview we can find.

Enter: The Bouchards.

We’re talking legions of fans, a sprinkling of minor controversies, and, um, one hell of a gene pool.

They also, funnily enough, have a slight connection to the royal family.

Most children of the Canadian family from Montreal, Quebec are actually named after British royals – most notably, twins Eugenie and Beatrice, who are of course named after Prince Andrew’s daughters.

So who… are they? And why, we assume much to Kris Jenner’s dismay, are people calling them the “new Kardashians”?

Eugenie

The family’s popularity is really all thanks to tennis star Eugenie, who exploded onto the scene when she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and French Open in 2014, before storming into the Wimbledon final at just 20 years old.

It was during her Australian Open appearance when she first made headlines, after stepping off court to a male TV presenter’s request to “give us a twirl” in order to show off what she was wearing.

The question was, understandably, slammed on social media at the time, with Twitter users questioning whether the reporter would have asked Roger Federer or other male stars the same question.

While Eugenie’s tennis career seems to have stalled (she dropped to number 147 in the world rankings last year) her celebrity status is climbing to peaks comparable to glamorous Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova.

She’s amassed an enormous social media following, and graced the pages of Sports Illustrated and a number of women’s magazines.

She also made headlines when she agreed to go on a date with a fan on Twitter in a flirty bet, when she failed to correctly predict the winner of the 2017 Super Bowl.

Beatrice

Eugenie’s older (by six minutes) sister Beatrice has a similar presence on social media, with nearly 285,000 followers.

Beatrice is a professional model, having worked for international brands such as L’Oreal.

Her feed is dotted with snaps of cocktail-laden beach holidays, fancy parties featuring huge glasses of wine, lavish dinners and, well, just photos of her being effortlessly glam:

Ahh, what a life.

Beatrice and Eugenie’s little brother Will (named after Prince William), is 20 years old, and while he hasn’t quite reached the Insta-fame of his sisters yet… something tells us he will soon:

The same goes for their sister Charlotte, 23, who is named after the daughter of Monaco’s Princess Caroline.

While Charlotte has seemingly stayed out of the spotlight with but a ~modest~ Instagram following of just over 80,000, she recently made headlines for testifying in court against a 40-year-old man who had been harassing her online for years.

News.com.au reports the messages from 40-year-old Danny Arsenault began in 2014. He’s accused of sending thousand of messages to Bouchard and is facing charges of “systematically harassing” her.

Mimi

The family’s fame not only spans oceans – it has extended from Eugenie’s immediate relatives to their cousin, star of UK faux-reality show Made in Chelsea, Mimi Bouchard.

Mimi lives in London’s hoity-toity south-west, a regular to Chelsea hotspots and immediately recognisable to fans of the guilty-pleasure program (AKA everyone in the UK).

The 22-year-old from Toronto runs a health and beauty blog, which is what initially led her to fall in with the Made in Chelsea crowd, including Fredrik Ferrier, Georgia Toffolo and Jess Woodley.

She also rolls with UK TV presenter Olivia Cox.

Her spiciest appearance on the show came when she confessed to sleeping with the boyfriend of another cast member when the two were “on a break”.

She boasts a whopping 161,000 Insta followers, and here she is matching a puppy to her coat, because content.
