If you can hear a strange sound vibrating across the world right now, that’s just a couple of thousand Game of Thrones’ fans weeping quietly into their hands.
While the TV fantasy juggernaut was the most nominated show at the 2019 Emmy Awards, with a record-shattering 32 nominations, it was the (equally brilliant) TV series Fleabag that was the overall biggest winner of the night. Fleabag walked away with a slew of top awards including Writing for a Comedy Series and Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Happily, Jharrel Jerome won the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie award for his performance in Netflix’s brilliant When They See Us while Michelle Williams’ rightfully scored a win for her showstopping performance as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon (you should watch it now on Foxtel).
However, the true bloodbath of the night occurred in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category. This was one of the most stacked categories of the night, with many of the actresses in the category there on a last-ditch attempt to win for a long-running role.
It was the final chance for Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams to win for their iconic runs on Game of Thrones along with Gwendoline Christie, the fan-favorite actress who famously nominated herself for the ceremony when the show refused to put her name forward.
In the end, the statue was handed to Julia Garner, for her slightly underwhelming role in Ozark, even triumphing over the brilliant Fiona Shaw for her role in Killing Eve.
