Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore lead the must-watch Stan Original Series The Assassin.

Another sensational and star-studded TV show is on its way, with Stan Original Series The Assassin commencing production in Greece this week. And it promises to be a scintillating journey through the secret world of assassins, with a touch of family drama thrown in to boot.

The Assassin stars Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Scoop) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel) as a mother-and-son duo.

Julie (Hawes) is a retired assassin living on a remote Greek Island, when she has a tense reunion with her estranged son Edward (Highmore) who comes to visit from England.

As someone whose own mum regularly says she wishes she was a secret spy, I'm hooked!

"Armed with questions around new information on his paternity, Edward battles to find the right time to speak to his frustratingly distant mother. But, when the moment finally presents itself, things take a deadly turn as Julie's dangerous past catches up with her and they must flee the island and go on the run together," the synopsis reads.

"Edward's quest for truth clashes with Julie's secrecy whilst they are forced to work together in a fight for survival, testing their dysfunctional relationship to its limits. Amid uncovering a dark conspiracy they believe to be their only threat, a greater danger emerges that will destroy their relationship entirely. In a race against time, Julie fights to save Edward and salvage their relationship as past and present collide in a showdown across the globe…"

The six-part series boasts an all-star cast, with Hawes and Highmore joined by a group of actors with impressive pedigrees. And more cast members will be announced soon.

The lineup includes Shalom Brune-Franklin (Stan Original Series The Tourist, Baby Reindeer), Gina Gershon (Riverdale, New Amsterdam), Richard Dormer (Blue Lights, Game of Thrones), Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Pirates of the Caribbean), Alan Dale (Dynasty, Lost) Gerald Kyd (The Swarm, The Split), Devon Terrell (Stan Original Series Totally Completely Fine, Cursed), and David Dencik (The Ipcress File, No Time To Die).

The series promises to be every bit as thrilling as The Tourist, another suspenseful fan-favourite from Stan.

The Assassin has been written and created by Harry and Jack Williams (The Tourist, Boat Story, The Missing) with Krissie Ducker (Killing Eve, Sweetpea), Hamish Wright (Significant Other) - who serve as executive producers - and Selina Lim (Sex Education) also writing.

"After the enormous success of The Tourist, Stan is delighted to welcome back the genre brilliance of Harry and Jack Williams with The Assassin," Stan Chief Content Officer Cailah Scobie said.

"With an incredible ensemble cast led by Keely Hawes and Freddie Highmore, we can’t wait to bring this nail-biting family thriller to Australian audiences."
