Emma Watson has addressed the rumours she is likely to be cast as Ariel in the upcoming live action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Last week it was announced director Sofia Coppola would be directing the project, and since then it’s been speculated Emma, who worked with Sofia in the movie The Bling Ring, could be in line for the lead role. Even her Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe’s name has been thrown in as a possible Prince Eric.
However, Emma's not getting too far ahead of herself. At the premiere of her latest film Noah she told Variety, “I’d have to read [the script] first,” adding, "I love Sofia so much." It seems the feeling is mutual - Sofia was quoted as saying she was “so impressed” with Emma during filming of The Bling Ring.
Emma's Ariel link also runs deeper - she confessed to Variety that she dressed up as the beloved mermaid for her 5th birthday. That’s totally method acting, right? And we know she'd look gorgeous as a redhead.
Regardless, we're pretty excited about this The Little Mermaid project. If anyone knows how to retell a well-known story, it’s Sofia Coppola. Not only does she hail from film production fame (can I get a Francis Ford in here?), but if her treatment of the story of Marie Antoinette is any indication, this fairytale’s in safe hands.
Who do you think would make a good Ariel?
