Emma Thompson has a message for Tony Abbott.

Legend of all legends, actress Emma Thompson has a message for our Prime Minister Tony Abbott:

The 55-year-old British actress is standing on the deck of the Greenpeace Esperanza in the Arctic, where she went to see the effects of climate change for herself. She’s there with her 14-year-old daughter Gaia and another actress.

Because if anything can shame politicians into action on climate change, it’s a celebrity with a personalised sign.

Thompson released the following statement, to elaborate on the message she wrote in blue text, addressing leaders of countries who will not act on climate change. She wrote to Russian president Vladimir Putin as well as our PM, so Tony Abbott is in dubious company here.

“We’re told that it is all our fault, global warming — we want the fuel, we want our cars, and that the oil industry is merely responding to the needs of a greedy public. But that’s simply not fair. Most of us want to live cleaner lives, but our governments don’t make these things easily available.

“The changes we need, that the Arctic needs, must come from the top as well as the bottom. We need electric cars to be cheaper and more accessible. We want safer bike lanes in every big city. We want plastic bags to be banned for good. We need governments to stand up to the dirty industries that have for so long funded and controlled them, and to give us all an affordable chance to live our lives in a more sustainable way.”

She has a valid point and Climate science is fact. The 1% control where the money goes and climate change is taboo. Tony wont be doing anything to stop the oil companies !! Is she aware of conservative governments? If anything he'll help the companies out. The greed of humans will only grow, capitalism wont take a step back now . Lets face it, governments and big industries are on the same team, nothing will be done unless there was an overthrow of power. That's reality .
Well meaning but wishful thinking by a naïve celebrity. We have awful human tragedies which need more attention right now anyway plus other problems.
Greenpeace the company can be trouble makers and are questionable sometimes , most volunteers mean well though.

Don't make me laugh. The 1% want a world wide market on carbon dioxide. Firstly, because it doesn't solve any problem ... and secondly because they all (including the fossil fuel companies) make huge profits when the price of oil, coal etc skyrocket.

Can you honestly tell me how a capitalist solution (a world wide market on carbon dioxide) is ever going to solve what you'd perceive as being a capitalist problem? The clever part of this con is getting the Greenies to push for it. I mean ask yourself what you'd think of this solution if it was the rightwing parties of the world (Liberal, Republican, Tory etc) who were suggesting it ... a market solution where carbon credits are bought and sold on a Stock Exchange? Nothing has ever gone wrong with a Stock Exchange.
