BREAKING: Craig Thompson has been found guilty of fraud and theft charges
Former Labor MP Craig Thompson has been found guilty of fraud and theft charges – but acquitted of other charges – over his misuse of a union credit card during his time as national secretary of the HSU.
In 2011, Thompson was charged with 154 charges of fraud relating to his alleged use of Health Services Union funds to hire sex workers.
Channel 7 raided by police.
The headquarters of Channel 7 in Brisbane and Sydney have reportedly been raided by police as part of an investigation into proceeds from any interviews with convicted drug smuggler Shapelle Corby.
Last week, it was reported that Channel Seven would pay Corby to tell her story.
In a statement, the AFP said: “The AFP can confirm it has executed a number of search warrants in Sydney in relation to an ongoing Proceeds of Crime Act matter.”
We’ll update the story as more details come to light.

1. Congratulations David Morris!
Australian skier David Morris has won our third medal at the Winter Olympics by taking silver in the men’s aerials competition.
It follows Lydia Lassila’s bronze medal and Torah Bright’s silver medal.
2. Father, aged 15 charged over baby’s life threatening injuries
A fifteen-year old father from Western Australia has been charged with assault on his 4-week old baby in Bunbury.
The baby boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Major Crime Squad allege the incident happened at the Bunbury Regional Hospital on Saturday night.
The baby’s father, a 15-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated grievous bodily harm.
3. Babysitter blames parents
A babysitter accused of shaking a 10-month old baby who later died from her injuries has blamed the parents of the girl.
Ketapat Jenkins, a mother of two is trial for manslaughter in the Victorian Supreme Court. She has pleaded not guilty.

4. One dead, up to 50 injured at Manus Island.
UPDATE: It’s been reported that one person is dead and another is in a critical condition after a series of violent incidents at Manus Island.
Speaking with the media today, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison confirmed the death.
“There were 13 serious injuries, there was one critical injury, and there is one person who is deceased,” he said.
“The deceased person involved a head injury and that person passed away on transfer to the hospital.”

The Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison has confirmed there has been another serious incident overnight at Manus Island with a number of persons with ‘serious injuries’.
“Non-essential staff were evacuated as a precautionary measure last night prior to any escalation of these events, when low level demonstrations resumed,” Mr Morrison said in a statement.
Mr Morrison said all staff have been accounted for and normal operations have resumed.
“There are a number of persons with serious injuries,” Mr Morrison said.
Radio New Zealand are reporting that:
“Locals armed with machetes, pipes, sticks and stones, attacked asylum seekers, with one reportedly thrown from the second floor of a building, and up to 50 in one compound suffering machete cuts.
Mr Rintoul says many asylum seekers have now fled, to avoid the attackers.
He says the Australian Immigration Department has blood on its hands and the Manus Island centre has always been a disaster waiting to happen.”
5. Will WA go back to the polls?
A judge is expected to hand down a ruling today on whether the WA election result is invalid after the AEC lost 1370 votes in a recount of the Senate ballots.
A landmark ruling by Australia’s High Court is likely to send West Australians back to the polls, a leading constitutional expert, George Williams has told Sky News.
The AEC estimates the election will cost up to $11 million.
6. North Korea
Former High Court judge Michael Kirby has told the United Nations inquiry into North Korea of torture and sexual violence, massive malnutrition, killing verging on genocide and the total control by the North Korean regime’s propaganda apparatus.
The former judge was appointed by the United Nations in March to lead a landmark commission of inquiry into North Korea.
His inquiry heard evidence of a woman forced to drown her own baby in a bucket.
UN investigators are advising the UN to refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court.
7. Gold coast murder
A Gold Coast man will face court this morning charged with the murder of his step-daughter.
Police allege that Sherelle Locke was stabbed in the heart by her violent and drunk step-father as she helped her mother end the abusive relationship she had been in.
8. Nut allergy inquiry
An inquest in Melbourne into the death of a 15-year old boy, Jack Irvine has heard that he was given a macadamia biscuit by a Melbourne go-karting camp.
The teenager went into anaphylactic shock and died six days later.
The inquest into his death has heard his family filled in a form letting camp organisers know about his allergy before sending him to the camp in September 2012, but a staff shortage at the camp meant that lunch was ordered from Subway, including the biscuit.
9. News Corp payment blows out federal budget
The Australian Financial Review has reported that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has blown an $880 million hole in the federal budget after winning a long-running battle with the Australian Tax Office.
It was one of the biggest single factors in the multi-billion dollar federal budget blowout announced by treasurer Joe Hockey in December.
News Corporation defeated the ATO in the Federal Court in July, the payment showed up in News Corp’s accounts in December and January.

11. Sydney hit with fuel shortage
There are fears of a petrol shortage in Sydney as the fuel deliverer Cootes has been taken off the road.
The SMH reports that BP have confirmed that a shortage of Cootes trucks had disrupted the company’s distribution network and stations in Sydney had run out of some types of petrol.
12. Surprise baby
A pregnant woman in the US, Kimberly Fulgate has been given the shock of her life by delivering four babies when she expected three.
She told the Clarion Ledger that the first shock was finding out she was expecting triplets the day before her 42nd birthday.
When the babies were delivered the fourth girl, who had been hiding from ultrasound imaging was announced by a Doctor exclaiming “ more feet”.
Even more unbelievable was that Fugate gave birth to identical quadruplets, an event of “almost incalculable” odds, her obstetrician said.

Lunch: salad such as Thai beef, lamb, chicken or prawn
And for his dinner: a hot meal of beef and salad, lamb or roast beef. Plus dessert

My God, I just saw this on ninmsn.com. An 81 year old grandfather has been jailed for the rapes of his two and seven year old grandchildren.
He got six and a half years in jail with a non parole period of three years and three months.
Granted, the guy will probably die in jail, but six and a half years? For the rapes of the man's very own grandchildren who were two and seven?

A while back, I got an AVO against my ex-neighbour who was aggressive, threatening, intimidating and confronting. He was about 79 years old. I was scared of him and what he might do.
I think oldies are often regarded as sweet harmless seniors with cardigans, oddities and butter-scotches. But age tends, I find, to make people a more concentrated version of what they've always been - the hard ones get worse, the soft ones mellow further. Quite a surprising number of over 75 year olds are violent and commit crime, though a lot of people would find that hard to comprehend. Do you recall in Victoria a few years ago the 77-year-old retired fruiterer murdered his wife of 50 years with an axe?
Anyway, they are the same person generally that they were at age 30, just older. Maybe some people are criminals who never got caught? Maybe they were involved in domestic violence or sexual abuse decades earlier but it went unreported.
I hope Thompson gets a community order, not jail. I hope he is sentanced to community service in a nursing home changing bed pans like HSU members do. I hope he has to do that for as many hours as the amount he tipped off divided by the low HSU hourly wage, times 100.

Do you think there is something wrong with giving bedpans that you see it as some sort of punishment?
Not necessarily look after the patients, but he could mop floors, clean the pan room and work in the kitchens.
