Chrissie Swan's excellent attitude to the idiots who call her "fat".

“I know I’m fat, it’s like saying I have brown hair.”

Chrissie Swan – TV and radio personality, the best thing to ever come out of Big Brother and a recent visitor to an African jungle – doesn’t give a shit what you say about her body.

Swan, 41, made her return to morning television on Studio 10 and was asked to recall an incident from a few years ago when a Big Brother crew member commented on her weight.

“I was taking my bra off and I heard someone behind me say ‘I know you like big women’,” she said.

“And I was like ‘What’s going on, are they sending pictures of my boobs to friends? Like what, have I become someone’s fetish?’ I felt very vulnerable and scared, it was awful.”

Now, Swan says, comments like that don’t bother her.

“When someone calls me fat I know that, I’ve got a mirror, tell me something I don’t know,” she said.

“That really doesn’t bother me to be honest, that’s like saying I have brown hair. I am an imperfect person and I know that about myself.”

I had never had a problem with my weight (being a healthy size 10 - 12) until I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease at 28. Since then my weight has become a big issue (pardon the pun), due to inability to exercise and mediation caused weight gain. I am constantly shocked at the incredibly rude and thoughtless comments people make about my weight. I've been told that I'm 'lucky' that my husband stays with me by a charming Mum at my daughter's school. Strangers have commented that I don't need to eat any more chips, which I was purchasing at the food court for my Husband, a friend has asked me to stand next to her in a wedding picture so she would look skinny, and countless little digs which are often framed as jokes. I pretend that it doesn't bother me, but of course it does, particularly when my 9 year old daughter is with me. I have always told her that people come in all different colours, shapes and sizes, but underneath everyone is the same. It's a shame some adults seem to have forgotten this. There can be many reasons why someone is overweight, so unless you are a medical professional who has my best interests at heart, I'd rather not hear your opinion.
