There are few shoes harder working than the humble loafer. 

The masculine-chic style of footwear can be worn to work, dinner and over the weekend when grabbing drinks with friends. Do they take a while to break in? Sure, but once you do, it's well worth it.

This year, loafers are trending in a big way. 

We've seen designers like Chanel and Prada bring them back in patent and leather styles, and more and more women are pairing them with long socks and mini skirts. 

But you don't need a designer budget to get your hands on a great pair, and you don't have to be an avid mini skirt wearer either. Loafers go with just about anything, including ankle-grazer jeans and tailored trousers. 

Just remember though, that when you wear a loafer, the entire outfit is the shoe. 

If you're wanting to dip your toes into ballet flats but don't want to go full 2010, then a loafer is the perfect middle ground.
