“I knew from the beginning my husband’s brain was a little different than mine.”
Comedian Amy Schumer has provided insight into her marriage to chef Chris Fischer, who is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder – the signs of which, she says, are what made her fall madly in love with him.
“My husband was diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger’s. He has autism spectrum disorder. He’s on the spectrum. And there were some signs early on,” she explains in her new Netflix show Growing, a one-hour comedy special which focuses on pregnancy and marriage.

Recalling a time when she tripped over in front of him, the pregnant actress said his reaction was… rather unusual.
“Nine out of 10 people would go, ‘Oh my god, are you OK?'” Schumer said while recounting the incident. “Maybe more like 10 out of 10 people. Instead, my husband […] kind of froze and became a lighthouse, opening and closing his mouth.”
This was one of many “huh?” moments, as Schumer describes them, that filled the early days of their relationship.
But she says, even before his autism diagnosis came to light a little way into their relationship, it was the exact quirks that come hand-in-hand with the disorder which made her fall even harder for him.
“Once he was diagnosed, it dawned on me how funny it was because all of the characteristics that make it clear that he’s on the spectrum are all of the reasons that I fell madly in love with him,” Schumer says. “That’s the truth. He says whatever is on his mind. He keeps it so real. He doesn’t care about social norms or what you expect him to say or do.”
She says the age-old situation of asking your partner about your outfit before you leave the house sees him unable to tell white lies, something she is forever grateful for.
“If I say to him, ‘Does this look like sh*t?’ He’ll go, ‘Yeah, you have a lot of other clothes. Why don’t you wear those?'”
But he can also make me feel more beautiful than anyone ever has in my whole life. And he can’t lie! Isn’t that the dream man?,” she adds.
Schumer and Fischer married in February 2018, in a surprise, low-key ceremony held in Malibu. She announced her pregnancy with a hilarious (to be expected from the comedian) Instagram post in October.
The 37-year-old posted a photo of herself and her 38-year-old partner’s heads imposed onto a photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle strolling down a boardwalk.
That alone was a massive hint that the couple were expecting a baby. But the Inside Amy Schumer star wasn’t done yet.
The caption directed fans to the Instagram of political journalist Jessica Yellin, to get the full scoop on her “exciting news”.
“About to announce some exciting news on @jessicayellin insta page,” Amy wrote.
“Please follow her for up to the minute #newsnotnoise she breaks down what’s really going on. She agreed to post a lil noise today for me! Follow her and VOTE!!”
Over on Jessica’s Instagram Stories, the veteran journalist posted a list of her recommendations for candidates to vote for in the US midterms next month.
And right down the bottom were the words: “I’m pregnant – Amy Schumer”.
“Growing” is available for streaming on Netflix now.
