Do you remember what you wore to your school formal? Remember how much time and excitement went into planning your outfit?
Imagine losing your dress before you'd even worn it - along with everything else you owned.
This is the reality for many Year 12 students in the Blue Mountains and other regions affected by the NSW bushfires. The state's worst fire disaster in almost 50 years has ruined what should have been an exciting, exhilarating time in their lives - finishing their HSC exams and celebrating the end of 13 years of schooling.
Instead, they're dealing with the devastating loss of their family homes and belongings, including their formal outfits.
However, thanks to 18-year-old Maddi Ventura, these students may still have reason to celebrate. Last week, Maddi, a uni student from Faulconbridge in the Blue Mountains, created a Facebook event named 'A firey formal dress exchange' in support of local students whose gowns were destroyed.
"Hey ladies - to help our sisters who have lost their formal dress in the fire, post a picture of your dress and its size etc. so they can take their pick. Much love xxx," she wrote.
The response was immediate. Over 5000 people from around the country have joined the event, offering cars and professional tailoring, spray tanning, make up and photography services in addition to dresses, jewellery, shoes and attire for male students.
Maddi's gesture was a simple one - but for the young men and women who have lost everything, her thoughtfulness will make a huge difference.
UPDATE: AAP has reported today (October 23) that a suspected 'looter' has targeted the 'Firey formal dress exchange' Facebook event. According to dress donor Jessica Byles, a woman has contacted over 50 people for the dresses they have offered up, asking for several gowns in a variety of sizes and claiming they were for her wedding. Police have been contacted about the matter.
