I found my MIL became a whole lot easier to handle when I just stopped caring about her. I was always and still am civil and respectful and played my role which means that every time she was disrespectful it looked worse on her part. Eventually she saw I wasn't taking the bait and she just stopped and also became civil and respectful. Our relationship is fine now where as it was strained before. Number 1 rule for me is to not diss her to your husband. He will naturally defend her. By letting go of small things, when there was a bigger issue I was able to calmly explain to husband "MIL did this and I'm not 100% happy with it, can you keep an eye out for it please" and left it at that. Now he knows that if I do mention something about her, it's a genuine issue and not me venting for no reason.

When I told my husband the dogs had better breeding than he did. I forgot my in laws were sitting at the table. The dogs were pedigree Cavaliers
