The people of Australia have spoken, and The Rubens have taken out the coveted Number 1 spot in the Triple J Hottest 100, with ‘Hoops’.
The Rubens beat Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer and Tame Impala for the most popular song of 2016.
This year, almost 300,000 people voted from 172 countries. It’s the highest of votes Triple J have ever received for the Hottest 100 countdown.
Of the songs that made the top 100, 54 per cent were from Australian artists, and 26 artists made their Hottest 100 debut.
In the lead up to the countdown, hackers had listed Tony Abbott, Shannon Noll, Justin Bieber, and Swedish DJ Darude as winners of the Hottest 100 on Wikipedia.
But tonight, Australian’s have shown that while trolling is definitely hilarious in the lead-up to the Triple J Hottest 100, when it gets to the pointy end, we take our music very seriously.
Congratulations to The Rubens. ‘Hoops’ will always remind us of the summer of 2015/16.
