Eurovision winner: Look away if you don't want to know!

Conchita will be the Queen of our hearts forever, but now she has passed the Eurovision crown on…

Before we talk about the winner, let’s share the joy that is Lee Lin Chin representing us on the world stage as she announces Australia’s points in the competition:

Australia gave our DOUZE POINTS to Sweden, which was cool because they also gave us 12 points (they really appreciate all of the cash we spend at Ikea).

And now the winner:

Mans Zelmerlow (which is a fun name to say) from Sweden is the winner of the Eurovision song contest 2015. He won the hearts of Europe (and Australia) with his song ‘Heroes’ (not the David Bowie song. Think one part Maroon 5 and five parts something that Mark Holden might have written for the winner of Australian Idol). Sample lyrics: “We’re the heroes of our times. But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds”.

But let’s be honest, Eurovision is not all about the winner, it is about the weird and wonderful, the catchy and the cringe. Here are just a couple of gooduns from this year.

Let’s start with Guy Sebastian who scored us a TOP 5 finish (take that, Europe!). Guy was channelling a little bit of Bruno Mars with his song Tonight Again, which included the lyrics: “I don’t want tomorrow — oh baby tonight’s so good. Tonight’s so good. This is one tough act to follow — oh baby tonight’s so good.” Oh baby. Anyway, here it is:

Israel are no strangers to Eurovision controversy, like that time Jordan refused to recognise their performance and victory. Their entry this year was from Nadav Guedjc called ‘Golden Boy.’ Yep. And it was as catchy, camp and a little bit wrong, as you would expect. Though we would have preferred slightly more belly-rolling and just a touch more of the pyrotechnics.

Azerbaijan was great, and not just because we really like saying Azerbaijan. Hour of the Wolf was described by performer Elnur Huseynov as a “mystical contemporary ballad.”

Yah-huh.

It is haunting and, of course, a little bit weird, and the backup dancers do a bang-up job.

Eurovision is, of course, all about diversity, with last year’s winner (the bearded-lady Conchita Wurst) a prime example.

This year it was Finland flying the flag. Their entry, punk band PNK all have learning disabilities. Sadly, they did not make it into last night’s final and their fans were understandably disappointed, one tweeting,”PKN made me proud of Finland. Thanks for being amazing, talented and gifted guys. I wish I had your strength and courage.”

Well it’s time to put away the stage make-up and chiffon for another year. Let the countdown begin. Only 364 days to go, guys!
