Sheetal Devi was born without arms. Then an army officer saw her potential.

Sheetal Devi balances the archery bow between the toes of her right foot and lines up the shot.

Using her shoulder as support, she releases the bow, and the arrow hits the bullseye at the Paris Paralympics

Her calmness and accuracy are astonishing. And now the Indian Paralympian is making waves for her talent shown at the Paralympic Games, despite having only taken up the sport two years ago.

Devi Sheetal's childhood.

Devi was born in Jammu and Kashmir in India in 2007.

Upon birth, she was diagnosed with phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder causing underdeveloped limbs.

In Devi's case, her arms did not fully form — but she's never let that stop her pursuing her passions.

As a young child growing up in a small village, Devi's favourite thing to do was climb trees. She would do so by shimmying herself up the tree's trunk with her torso — her legs doing the grunt work.

"I wanted to touch the heights of the trees, that was the only thing which made me happy," she told a news agency recently.

How Devi Sheetal became a Paralympian.

At a youth event organised by the Indian Army near Devi's regional town in 2021, army coaches noticed Devi's incredible foot coordination and upper body strength; athleticism likely developed from her time climbing trees.

The army coaches asked her if she would like to try para archery, and she agreed to give it a go. Initially, she tried the sport with prosthetic arms, but it didn't work out. Then the army coaches had an ingenious idea.

They recalled American Paralympian Matt Stutzman, who taught himself to shoot by setting the bow on his right shoulder and using his feet to draw it and release the arrow.

Stutzman, nicknamed the 'armless archer' ended up becoming a silver medallist at the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Devi's army coaches had seen Stutzman's viral performance at various competitions. They encouraged Devi to give Stutzman's technique a go for herself. She excelled, joining an elite archery coaching academy, and was competing among the able-bodied archers at national competitions.

Her accolades within the past two years are impressive.

She is the first Indian to win Best Female Para Archer of the Year by the World Archery Awards.

She won silver at the World Championships in Plzen, Czech Republic. She then won gold at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

"I love the feeling of hitting the centre of the target," the 16-year-old told the Paralympics' media

"I made my parents proud. I made my coach proud. When people used to stare at me, I would feel very sad. But not anymore, because now I know that I am one in a million."

During the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Devi was met with thunderous applause from the fans inside the stadium during her match. She had managed to hit the bullseye in her first attempt.

Unfortunately, Devi just missed out on competing for a singles medal.

But in very happy news... Devi managed to win Bronze in the mixed compound open archery event alongside fellow archer Rakesh Kumar.

The duo secured the victory overnight, winning by a single point.

At the Indian Business Leader Awards in 2023, Sheetal won the award for Para Sports Leader of the Year.

In her acceptance speech, she said: "I used to tell my coach, I wouldn't be able to do it... but he motivated me and now I'm here. I never played a sport yet there were some people who saw my potential and supported me. This transformed my life. Many children in rural India don't get the opportunity."

"I hope, like me, you focus only on your abilities and rise against all odds because if I can do it, so can you."
