Between Japanese manicures and 'Russian nails', to the new French mani and 'old money' manicures, 2024 has been all about the natural-looking nail.

But there's a new nail trend on the block — and it's gaining popularity for its ability to offer a natural look that mimics real nails while providing the strength and durability often associated with BIAB.

It's called 'hyperrealistic nails' and it's all about creating the appearance of naturally long and healthy nails — even if you can't grow them yourself.

Because if you're someone with perpetually short nails who's always wanted someone to ask, "are they your real nails?!" this could be the trend for you.

Here's everything you need to know.

What are hyperrealistic manicures?

Hyperrealistic nails are a nail trend that aims to create the illusion of natural, long nails without having to grow them out. Put simply, hyperreal manicures are like your nails but better.

On TikTok, 'hyperrealistic manicures' have millions, upon millions of views, featuring long, enviable, natural-looking nails with one secret: they're not actually real.

Commonly created using gel or acrylic extensions, these nails are carefully sculpted and coloured to mimic the look of real nails, down to the smallest details like the nail bed, lunula, and colour variations (for example, you'll notice they feature yellowed or milky tips as opposed to stark white tips).

Like, some of them look so real you seriously can't tell.

How to get hyperrealistic nails.

If you're looking to jump on the hyperrealistic nail trend, it's best to see a skilled nail technician who specialises in this technique.

Usually, the process involves your natural nails being prepped, and your cuticles filed down. Nail extensions are then glued on (to the tips of your nails) and sculpted using gel or acrylic to create a natural shape.

The nail colour is then carefully mixed to match your natural nail tone, often using a combination of cream, taupe, and pastel yellow gel polishes. A thin layer of the custom nail colour is applied over the entire nail, followed by a glossy top coat.

The key is using the right mix of colours and applying them in thin, translucent layers to capture the depth and variations of a real nail.

What are the pros and cons of hyperrealistic nails?

The best part about hyperrealistic nails is that you can achieve the look of long, natural nails without the wait. Stronger nails are also less prone to breaking or chipping, which is also a big plus. What's more, hyperrealistic nails can be customised to match your exact nail colour. Meaning? They'll look pretty darn realistic.

However, it's important to note that hyperrealistic nails require skill and precision to create a truly realistic look and they can often be expensive due to the materials and technician's expertise. It's also worth noting that the prep and removal process can weaken natural nails over time, which can wreak havoc on the health of your nails.

How to make hyperrealistic nails last.

Hyperrealistic nails typically last between two to six weeks, depending on the type of nail enhancements used and how well they are maintained.

To keep your hyperrealistic nails looking their best, it's usually recommended to avoid excessive water exposure (for example, wear gloves for cleaning and washing dishes), and be gentle when removing them.

Regular nail maintenance appointments are also recommended to fill in any gaps as your natural nails grow out. With the right nail tech and proper care, hyperrealistic nails can provide a low-maintenance way to achieve the long, healthy nail look you've always wanted. Just be prepared for the investment and potential impact on your natural nails.
