The struggle is real.

I’m engaged, and among all the wedding stress, there’s one thing in particular that’s worrying me.

Not the dress.

Not the venue.

Not the vows, guest list or bonbonniere.

Oh no – it’s far more important than those things. I’m talking about wedding day hair.

You see, I’ve always been cursed with tricky, frizz-prone hair (thanks, mum) which means my head resembles a Pomeranian at the merest hint of humidity.

Oh, and I’m planning to get married in tropical, humid Fiji. Go figure.

So yes, I’m more than a little worried.

To get some perspective, I recently asked a bunch of women if they had any wedding day hair regrets… and their advice is pretty invaluable.

1. I had a hair trial, but then my hairdresser said I should get an extension piece put in to have more hair at the bottom – I wanted my hair over my shoulders and she was worried what it would look like from the back. Thankfully, she got the exact same colour as my hair and it all worked out perfectly. HOWEVER… my hair regret would be the unsexiness of not only spending 15 minutes pulling bobby pins out of my hair, but also pulling a large chunk of fake hair out (or getting my new husband to do it) at the end of the night. – Avi

2. I didn’t want anything fancy, just classic, loose waves. But for some reason, the hairdresser just couldn’t pull it off. In the end she gave me a head full of those tight, ringlet, porcelain-doll style curls. I hated it. I cried. And I just didn’t look like me at all, because the style was so extreme. – Anna

3. I was a bridesmaid at my good friend’s wedding, and I hated my hair. I always wear my hair out, but she made us wear our hair in tight up-dos, which didn’t suit my face at all. I didn’t speak up and just went along with it, but I wish I’d gently asked if I could have my hair differently. Sally

4. I was 21 when I got married and had no personal style. So I just went to some random hairdresser on the day of the wedding and asked her to do something with my hair. What she did looked quite nice but I had to stand outside the hairdresser in the wind for ages afterwards, waiting for a lift, so my wedding hair just looks messy. Totally my fault for not having a clue. – Helen

5. I thought I’d experiment right before the wedding with new foils. At the time I thought they looked great but looking at photos now, I’m mortified. The style is really dated and I wish I’d just stuck to my natural hair colour, which is brunette. – Kim

6. Not having a hair trial is one of the dumbest decisions I have ever made. Now when I look at my photos I can’t help but cringe at the flatness of my style. Hate it. Don’t let this happen to you. – Jo

7. My hair was slightly shorter than shoulder-length, so I pretty much had to wear it out instead of in an elegant up-do like I wanted. I did try to grow it out, but I gave up because it there was so much breakage and it was in such bad condition. I’m sure I could have done more to make sure my hair was strong and healthy. – Jenna

8. I’d been bleaching my hair for years before my wedding day and as a result, my hair was damaged – badly. I wish I had done a better job repairing it so it didn’t look as fried on the day. – Chantelle

9. I just assumed I could take my brittle and frizzy hair to the hairdresser on the day and they could work miracles, but there’s only so much they could do. My damaged hair looked disastrous – it does not pay to be last-minute when it comes to wedding day hair. – Mel
