50 women were killed by violence in 2022. We must say their names.

Content Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that the following article may contain names of people who have died.

50 women won't be sitting around their Christmas tables this year.

50 women won’t be unwrapping gifts from loved ones. They won’t be smiling in family photos. They won’t be bringing in the new year.

Instead, in homes all over Australia, families will be grieving the 50 women killed by violence this year.

The mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and friends whose lives have been cut short by another.

It’s a pain hundreds of other families carry with them.

Last year, 43 women were killed by violence, according to Destroy the Joint's tally, dedicated to counting dead women.

The year before that, we lost 57 women.

In 2019, it was 63.

And in the eight days left of 2022, there will likely be more.

Why? Because for many, this time of year is one of the most dangerous, with data showing an increase in domestic and family violence occurring over the holiday period.

Even outside of Christmas, the statistics are grim.

According to Our Watch, on average one woman a week is killed by a former or current partner. A partner who should have loved and cared for her, but instead, robbed her of her life.

This week alone, we lost three women to violence.

On Sunday, Sydney teacher Dannielle Finlay-Jones was killed at a home in Cranebrook, NSW.

A 33-year-old man, who was known to her, was later charged with her alleged murder.

Now, her loved ones and local soccer club have been left to mourn the "amazing" and "kind-hearted woman" they lost a week out from Christmas.

That same day, a 37-old-woman in New South Wales also lost her life.

Two days after that, it was a 28-year-old in the Northern Territory.

Come the new year, nothing will change.

We know this for certain.

We will continue to tell the stories of the women who lost their lives.

To share their photos.

To learn their names.

To add another strike to the tally.

So, when will enough be enough?

When will more be done to stop violence against women in Australia?

As the government works towards a ‘10-year plan' to end violence against women and children "within one generation", more women will continue to be murdered - more seats will continue to go empty at dinner tables.

This is our national crisis.

As 2022 draws to a close, here are the 50 women aged 18 to 92, who were killed by violence this year, according to Destroy the Joint.
