50 women won't be sitting around their Christmas tables this year.
50 women won’t be unwrapping gifts from loved ones. They won’t be smiling in family photos. They won’t be bringing in the new year.
Instead, in homes all over Australia, families will be grieving the 50 women killed by violence this year.
The mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and friends whose lives have been cut short by another.
It’s a pain hundreds of other families carry with them.
Last year, 43 women were killed by violence, according to Destroy the Joint's tally, dedicated to counting dead women.
The year before that, we lost 57 women.
In 2019, it was 63.
And in the eight days left of 2022, there will likely be more.
Why? Because for many, this time of year is one of the most dangerous, with data showing an increase in domestic and family violence occurring over the holiday period.
