But when traversing a country made up of states and territories, each with its own stories to tell, you’re bound to come away with some unique experiences under your travel belt. 

The USA is packed full of hidden cultural gems and adventures that could astound even the most seasoned traveller. Whether you’re a first-timer or your over-stamped passport is being held together by sticky tape, consider this your road map to the USA less travelled.

A day in Wynwood is a day spent soaking in the creative arts, eating incredible food and sipping on just about any cocktail or craft beer you could dream of. Just west of Miami Beach, you’ll find a cultural and creative hotspot, buzzing with live music, fresh street art and boutiques just begging you to explore.

Stop in at the Wynwood shop for unique jewellery and art from local artists, take pictures in front of the iconic graffiti art and then swing by for a happy hour sip at Margaritas Mama on Second Ave. If you’re staying nearby, check out the live offerings at Gramps, a bar/pizza place and live performance venue with serious ambience.

History buffs and outdoor adventurers will find a haven just off the famous Highway 395 nestled next to the Sierra Mountains. Hikers, campers and outdoor explorers can take advantage of the warmer months in the breathtaking Inyo National Forest before exploring the picturesque town of Bishop.

There, you’ll find a rich mix of arts, culture and history, including the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Centre brimming with stories, artefacts and music from the traditional owners of the land, many of whom still live on the reservation there today. For Gold Rush and steam train enthusiasts, the Laws Museum is a must-see.

You might think of New York City’s Broadway when searching for a mecca of world-class performance, but theatre lovers, gather close! It may surprise you that Chicago offers a vibrant theatre scene, with not one, but five regional Tony Award-winning theatres.

You could spend weeks in the Windy City and still leave wanting, but exploring Chicago’s downtown district known as 'The Loop' should be at the top of your list. Check out what’s on at Broadway in Chicago, a theatre company known for offering, you guessed it, 'the best of Broadway in Chicago' across their five stunning venues.

A trip in the summer months could surprise you with free theatre in the park and a visit to the Grant Park Music Festival, an unmissable (and free) classical music festival running for 10 weeks in Millennium Park.

Hike the Devil’s Bridge trail (and don’t forget your camera, because WOW), and take a trip to Jerome — an old (allegedly) haunted ghost town where you can discover the history of the Wild West. For those looking for a more spiritual experience, you can delve into the healing power of the famous Sedona Vortex, thought to enhance spiritual growth and connection in those who visit.

Be sure to check out the Crossroads where, according to folklore, blues legend Robert Johnson is said to have sold his soul to the devil to become a guitar superstar before dying at age 27 and kicking off the legend of the '27 club' (where famous musicians like Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain and Winehouse passed away at the peak of their careers).
