Queensland university lecturer allegedly posed as Justin Bieber to groom children.

A Queensland university lecturer allegedly posed as Justin Bieber while contacting children online to persuade them to perform sexual acts for him.

Gordon Douglas Chalmers, 41, who lectures law at Queensland University of Technology, has been charged with possession of child exploitation material, the Courier Mail reports.

Mr Chalmers is also charged with using a carriage service to groom and procure children under 16 and to access child pornography as well as 15 counts of disobeying a lawful order issued by a statutory authority.

The defendant appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody after Magistrate Elizabeth Hall refused bail.

The Courier Mail also reported the man's Kenmore home was searched by detectives yesterday, with his computer allegedly containing 6000 Skype contacts, most of which were with children overseas.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Henri Rantala said Mr Chalmers’ Skype account had a log of 123,000 conversations with numerous people.

“The defendant has adopted the guise of celebrity Justin Bieber and, during the process of that, has contacted children over the internet, children performing sexual acts for the defendant’s gratification,’’ Sgt Rantala said.

German federal police and US Homeland Security alterted Australian Federal Police to Mr Chalmers's actions, the court was told.

Magistrate Elizabeth Hall cited a risk of Mr Chalmers reoffending when she refused to grant his bail.

Ms Hall said she considered the material gathered, the evidence of his alleged offending and his response to a lawful direction.

She said there was an unacceptable risk of him destroying evidence, even if bail conditions were imposed.
